Spain's Público newspaper, the left-leaning daily that tried to take on El País, stopped its print edition yesterday.
El País was not welcoming of Público, which was close to the socialist administration of former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.
A web-only version of the newspaper will continue to be published, with Público claiming more than 5 million unique users.
The newspaper, with a circulation of about 87,000, was launched in 2007. It has been in trouble for some time, and reportedly needed €9m to keep on printing, according to The Guardian.
"It has not been possible to find investors, which is why this company … is obliged to stop printing," Mediapubli said in a statement on Friday.
Público's demise is another victory for El País owner Grupo Prisa which has fought a bitter parallel battle against Público founder Jaume Roures over TV rights to football.
