Marriott International expects to expand its footprint in Mexico by more than 50% to the end of 2023, following a robust year of new signings.In 2018, the company signed 36 deals in the Caribbean and Latin America, including more than 2,300 rooms or close to 40% of total rooms in Mexico. With these new deals, Marriott’s total Mexico pipeline now has nearly 50 properties consisting of 8,000 rooms across the country—from Mexicali to Cancun, including key gateway cities such as Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey and resort markets like Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta.As of Dec. 31, 2018, Marriott had 85 open properties in Mexico, representing about 34% of its 249 properties across 21 brands in the Caribbean and Latin American region.

Doritos®, one of PepsiCo‘s fastest growing global snacks brands, is putting the power of the “Spidey-Sense” in the palm of consumers’ hands through a global promotional partnership with Columbia Pictures’ upcoming summer release, in association with Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: Far From Home. In more than 35 markets around the world, Doritos will launch a global marketing campaign offering fans a chance to boldly embrace their inner superhero.The Doritos and Spider-Man collaboration will bring excitement to fans around the world. The fully integrated global Doritos promotional campaign will include on-pack design, in-store displays, TV creative, unique digital content and sweepstakes. Doritos packaging in markets across North America, Latin America, Egypt and Asia will feature exclusive images and thematic from the film, launching worldwide in early July.In more than 20 countries including Australia, Mexico and Colombia, fans will be able to snack on unique limited-edition Spider-Man: Far From Home themed Doritos that are the hero’s signature color – red.

Novartis is holding a global review of its media planning and buying business, much of which is managed by Starcom. The Publicis Media agency has handled the account in various markets.It is unclear whether the process will involve reviewing the markets in succession or as one centralised global process.

  • Lenovo

Chinese multinational technology company Lenovo has appointed Publicis Media to handle is global media strategy, planning and buying, as it consolidated agencies. Lenovo spends some US$125 million on advertising annually globally and Publicis Media will set up a new dedicated unit, Lenovo One Media, to handle the account. The unit will combine staff from Publicis Media agencies Spark Foundry and Performics. It will be responsible for 28 markets across the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia and Asia Pacific. Both traditional and digital media platforms are included as part of the account. Lenovo One Media will be overseen by Andre Marciano who will serve as chief operating officer.

 

 

  • Rappi

Colombian platform Rappi has just been launched in Chile. The service was launched in Santiago and allows home delivery from supermarkets, pharmacies, liquor stores, kiosks, warehouses, among other shops. Rappi is a platform that was born as a startup. It was created by Colombians Simón Borrero (CEO), Sebastián Mejía and Felipe Villamarín, in Bogotá. It was the first company to reach a million orders delivered in LATAM. It currently operates in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and now, in Chile. With nearly 2 million downloads in Latin America, Rappi promises an average delivery time of 35 minutes for restaurants and liquor stores. Carlos Leal, Marketing Director, Rappi is a member of Portada´s Brand Star Committee LatAm.

 

  • GOL Airlines

Boeing and GOL Airlines announced that the Brazilian carrier is adding the newest and largest member of the 737 MAX family with a new contract that converts 30 current MAX orders to the 737 MAX 10. GOL also placed a new order for 15 more MAX 8 airplanes, growing GOL’s total MAX orders to 135. The Brazilian airline says the advanced airplanes will help GOL meet its commitment to further enhance operational efficiency by flying a young, modern and safe fleet.GOL took delivery of its first 737 MAX airplane last month, kicking off a fleet renewal that will continue through 2028. The all-Boeing operator is set to be the largest MAX operator in Latin America. The 737 MAX is the fastest-selling airplane in Boeing history, with 100 customers ordering more than 4,600 jets.

 

 

  • Radisson 

Radisson announced the opening of Radisson Hotel Panama Canal. The hotel has a prime location in Panama City with breathtaking views of the Panama Canal, along with being just minutes away from Albrook International Airport. It is also within walking distance to the Amador Convention Center, which is scheduled to open December 2018. The hotel was originally a Country Inn & Suites by Radisson and recently completed a nearly $2 million renovation to convert the property into a Radisson.”We are honored to open our doors under the Radisson brand in the beautiful Panama City,” said Guillermo Quijano Duran, the hotel’s vice president. “The hotel’s new look features the brand’s natural tones and a design that puts the guest experience at the forefront allowing them to relax and create memorable moments throughout their stay.”

  • Glovo

Spanish startup Glovo, whose platform lets app users summon a gig economy worker to shop on their behalf, has bagged a €115 million (US$134M) Series C round of funding. The lead investors in the Series C are Rakuten Capital, Seaya Ventures and Cathay Innovation, which had also invested in its Series B.The startup says the new funding will be put towards optimizing its platform and tech resources to improve the service to riders, users and associated stores.It also plans to use the funds to fuel its momentum, noting it’s opened up six countries and 20 cities around the world in just three months. Its regions of focus are Latin America and EMEA areas (Europe, the Middle East and Africa), and its app is available in 61 cities in 17 countries in all at this stage.

IHG on February 20 announced that avid hotels, its new high-quality midscale brand, is now available for franchising in Mexico.The launch of the brand in Mexico closely follows the introduction of avid hotels in the U.S. and Canada last fall, where the company has already signed 75 franchise agreements. This milestone further demonstrates the brand’s rapid start and growth potential, according to IHG.The franchise fee for the brand will be five percent of gross rooms revenue, and all avid hotels franchise agreements for Mexico executed before Sept. 30, 2018, will be eligible for a two-point franchise fee discount in year one and a one-point franchise fee discount in year two. This incentive can only be earned if the hotel opens by Sept. 30, 2020.

 

  • Copa Holdings

Copa Holdings continued its strong operating momentum in the fourth quarter of 2017 in LatamThe number of flights, passengers, and miles flown were up, and the cost to fly was down, driving solid profitability. Stronger results were driven by a growing fleet, which allows for more available revenue miles. But costs were also down after management adjusted how long the company would depreciate aircraft. Here are the operating highlights to understand for the quarter:In January, Copa took delivery of a 737-800 aircraft, increasing the fleet size to 101. There isn’t a lot differentiating airlines, but Copa Holdings has distinguished itself as one of the best operators in the world.

Unilever plans to buy a range of personal and home care brands from Latin American company Quala.The purchase includes the haircare brands Savital, eGo and Bio-Expert as well as Fortident toothpaste and Aromatel fabric softener – businesses that have combined annual turnover of US$400 million in Latin American countries including Colombia, Ecuador and Mexico.The deal’s purchase price was not disclosed.

 

  • Avianca

Following a review that began in October last year, in which various agencies from LatAm, Spain and the United States participated, Avianca has chosen DDB Latina as its new global agency. The appointment also includes the Avianca Cargo and Deprisa businesses. Fahrenheit DDB, the network office in Lima, will lead the Peruvian, Brazilian and the rest of South America markets, while DDB Colombia will handle the global business and focus on the markets of Colombia and Europe. Avianca’s global communication will be handled from Bogota by a team led by Joanna Safi, VP of innovation and data, and Leo Macías, CCO, who together with CEO Borja de la Plaza and VP of brand and business strategy Jorge Becerra will head the DDB Colombia group.

Viva Air became the first low-cost airline to enter Peru‘s domestic market, posing a challenge to Santiago-based LATAM Airlines, which has long dominated the market.Viva – a unit of Irelandia Aviation, which is led by Ryanair founder Declan Ryan – will operate 11 domestic routes with a fleet of two Airbus A320 aircraft.The company said the move was part of its plan to expand in Latin America, where it is currently active in Colombia.Viva aims to transport 700,000 passengers in its first year of operations in the Andean country.

Sabre Corporation has opened a new regional headquarters in Montevideo, Uruguay, for Travel Network, its global travel marketplace.The organisation processes more than US$120 billion of global travel spend annually by connecting travel buyers and suppliers.The technology support the company provides on a large scale to hundreds of travel agencies and corporate travel buyers in Latin America and the Caribbean requires a pan-regional network of strategically located offices, connected to a headquarters that centralizes resources and optimizes business and consulting processes.This office is fully dedicated to companies within the region.The company has a global network of offices dedicated to business functions, software development, and global services.

 

  • Radisson 

Radisson® announced the opening of Radisson Hotel Quinta Rubelinas Cuernavaca. Located in Cuernavaca, which is nicknamed the “City of Eternal Spring”, the hotel features contemporary Mexican architecture and is surrounded by vibrant gardens and palm trees. The hotel also adds convenience to guests being only nine kilometers from the Cuernavaca Airport.

 

 

  • Airbnb

The home and apartment-rental company Airbnb Inc. said it will collect and remit taxes in Mexico City, the first such arrangement in Latin America. Airbnb will provide 3 percent of revenue generated from bookings in Mexico City to the city’s government. Hotels there also pay a 3 percent lodging tax to local officials. Airbnb said it intends to replicate the tax model throughout the region.Latin America is now Airbnb’s fastest-growing market, surpassing Japan. The company has 250,000 properties listed in the region, which encompasses Mexico, South America and parts of the Caribbean, including Cuba. Airbnb said bookings in Latin America have increased 148 percent in the past year. The privately held company declined to disclose revenue.Airbnb has big plans for Latin America. It expects to double staff there by the end of the year and open offices in Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. Headcount will likely quadruple to 120 people within the next two years, Airbnb said. The plans echo those of Uber Technologies Inc., the only technology startup in the U.S. more richly valued than Airbnb. Also like Uber, Airbnb faces competition everywhere it goes, including Latin America. Many Brazilians rely on local upstart Hotel Urbano, which is backed by at least $130 million from travel-booking giant Priceline Group Inc. and others, according to research firm CB Insights. Expedia Inc. owns AlugueTemporada, which operates a similar service but lists only 30,000 homes in Latin America.To win over locals, Airbnb is experimenting with ways to accommodate other payment systems unique to Latin American countries.

nbbnbThe competitive imported Mexican beer marketplace will get a new player with Anheuser-Busch InBev bringing the Estrella Jalisco brand to the United States. The 106-year-old Pilsner brand was first brewed in the city of Guadalajara, the capital and the largest city in the Mexican state of Jalisco.Estrella Jalisco’s packaging reflects its roots with the red, blue and yellow color scheme inspired by the flag of Jalisco, and the crest on the label inspired by the coat of arms of the city of Guadalajara. Anheuser-Busch InBev is betting on Hispanic consumers who will recognize and be familiar with the brew. The brand will be distributed in 10 states, including California, Texas, Illinois, New Mexico and New York.Anheuser-Busch began limited distribution of Montejo, another beer from the Grupo Modelo portfolio, in 2014. Montejo was similarly positioned as “authentically Mexican,” but the brand’s largely regional status within Mexico limited its ability to catch on here in the U.S.

descargaWith help from Avocados From Mexico,  Mexican Grill Chipotle will give customers the chance to win free chips & guacamole, one of its most popular items, in an effort to bolster sales, Adage reports.In order to win, customers need to play an online “Guac Hunter” game in which they are supposed to quickly spot several differences between very similar pictures. Chipotle incorporated assets and facts provided by industry marketer Avocados From Mexico into the game.In between the rounds, the site will offer some education about avocados. Chipotle hopes the game will appeal to those who have enjoyed its guacamole in the past.Those who play the game can share their contact information to get a text good for a free order of chips and guacamole at any Chipotle restaurant in the United States or Canada. The game will run through March 31.Chipotle’s other marketing strategies include sending 21 million pieces of direct mail, with food offers that run through May 15, and billboards up in major markets such as Chicago, full-page print advertisements and its upcoming Cultivate festivals.

  • Carnival Corporation

Carnival Corporation & plc, the world’s largest leisure travel company, has announced that Cuba has granted approval for the company to begin travel to Cuba starting on May 1, 2016. Following U.S. authorization granted in July 2015, Carnival Corporation is now cleared to operate the 704-passenger MV Adonia to Cuba through its newest brand Fathom. This marks the first time in over 50 years a cruise ship is approved to sail from the United States to Cuba.During each sailing, Carnival Corporation through its Fathom brand initially will visit Havana, Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba, three ports of call for which Carnival Corporation has obtained berthing approval.As part of this historic sailing in this inaugural year, travelers will enjoy an exciting Cuban experience and will sail aboard the 704-passenger MV Adonia, where they can choose to partake in onboard experiences, including Cuban- and Caribbean-inspired music and film options, as well as Cuban-inspired menu options.

Southwest Airlines confirmed that it has concluded its digital agency review by sending portions of its business to RPA and OgilvyOne, the consumer engagement wing of the WPP shop. Incumbent VML declined to participate in the review conducted by SRI, and news of the win means that Publicis’ Razorfish–which played the tech support role, redesigned the homepage and participated in the most recent RFP–will no longer work on the account moving forward. Hilton Worldwide has recently announced that Hilton HHonors members can now receive an exclusive discount on room rates by booking directly through its brand websites, award-winning Hilton HHonors mobile app and reservation call centers, or through preferred corporate travel partners and approved travel agents.   • Carnival Corp.

descarga (2)Carnival Corporation has begun evaluating its global media agency relationships and costs across brands, according to Adage. However, this is not a formal agency review. Carnival Corp. is the owner of other brands like Carnival Cruise Lines, Princess Cruises, Holland America, Seaborn and Costa Cruises, among others.Carnival spent US$115 million on U.S. measured media in 2014, according to Kantar Media. _ZlQ6EXu_400x400According to Omnicom CEO John Wren, the holding company will be launching a third global media agency network within the next few weeks. The new shop would join OMD and PHD in the holding company’s stable of global media agency brands. Wren said the new agency would give the company “additional capacity to manage more client relationships.” In addition, Wren said the new agency would be structured differently than the existing two networks.

Meanwhile the Latin American operations will now be part of Pernod’s Europe, Middle East and Africa business.Philippe Dréano, the head of Pernod Ricard Americas, will be retiring from the company after a 27-year career at the firm, the company said.
