The NextTV CEO Summit took place in Miami this week, and we found out what the major players in the Latin American pay-TV sector had to say about the OTT revolution, NetFlix LatAm expansion, governmental regulations and more.

“We need to find out if the Netflix revolution is a substitute or an addition to our offerings. We bought Nextel to offer our clients a mobile solution in major cities. In the US, Comcast has a huge budget with a large professional staff to innovate and market its services, which is something that is hard to do at a smaller scale.”

“The challenge in Argentina is that one government agency looks at content while another looks a technology, so regulation on the Netflix model may take some time. Access to bandwidth is still a challenge, while some like Movistar offer limited technology and cut rates to concentrate on volume.”

“Cable operators cannot expect to keep adding more channels that the market does not want in order to increase rates. Millennials do not want content that they don’t want so the industry has created the Skinny bundle, a few channels at a discount. And users are even going to free air, not in large numbers but a small percentage nonetheless.”

What? Telefónica will provide data and voice coverage for NII Holdings’ Nextel in Latin America region’s two biggest markets, Mexico and Brazil.
Why it matters? The service will be provided through Telefónica’s 3G mobile network.

Although Telefónica and Nextel will start implementing the deal, they will continue to independently manage their fields, in competition with each other.

Telefónica’s commercial brand in Brazil, Vivo, will benefit from the agreement by improving the networks’ distribution, aiming to cover a larger portion of the country.

As indicated by Anatel, the country’s telecom authority, Brazil’s Nextel will be able to accomplish the coverage requirements.

In México, Telefónica’s Movistar will reinforce its 3G wholesaler position while Nextel will increase its national coverage.

“The agreement allows both companies to optimise the infrastructure investments, while keeping the market position in Brazil and Mexico,” said Santiago Fernández, Telefónica’s president for Latin America.

“We will improve our services, being now able to offer 3G in larger areas of both countries,” said Steve Shindler, CEO of NII Holdings it. “We will use Telefónica’s network at a time when we are aiming to increase our coverage while rationalising our investments”.

Similar agreements have been reached by Telefónica in other Latin American markets such as Colombia, where a 4G with Millicom has been set up, and Chile where it is working together with Virgin Mobile.

nextel.pripNextel Brand, NII Holdings, and Motorola Mobility have launched in Argentina the “Prip Wi-Fi” Service.  Designed by Motorola, Prip uses a software-based service that is integrated with Nextel’s wireless network and is accessed via an icon on the handset. The service allows Nextel customers to connect with other PTT users via Nextel Argentina’s Wi-Fi network or while roaming.
