  • Rappi

On-demand delivery platform Rappi has appointed Ogilvy Mexico as its regional agency. Founded in 2015, the company nowadays operates in 23 cities in six LatAm countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay. Rappi landed the mexican market two years ago and has already more than one million users who make nearly 50,000 daily orders. It currently operates in the State of Mexico, Guadalajara, Querétaro, Monterrey, Mérida, Puebla and, of course, Mexico City. Rappi´s Marketing Director Carlos Leal is a member of Portada´s Brand Star Committee LatAm.

 

 

  • United Airlines

United Continental Holdings Inc is eying joint ventures with three Latin American carriers in the near future, Reuters has reported.United, the third-largest U.S. passenger carrier, is trying to finalize joint-venture agreements with Colombian airline Avianca Holdings , Panama’s Copa Airlines and Brazil’s Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras. Such deals would improve connectivity between the U.S. and Latin American aviation markets and create growth opportunities.United is looking to add lie-flat beds in business class in 2020 on some of its Boeing 737 MAX 10 narrow-bodies that would fly domestic routes.

 

 

  • Holiday Inn

IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) announced the new opening of the 4-story, 196-room Holiday Inn Ciudad Juárez hotel. Located on Juarez Tecnologico Avenue 3620, Partido Iglesias neighborhood, and a few minutes from the Abraham Gonzalez International Airport serving Ciudad Juarez, the hotel opens following an investment made by its franchisee Fibra Inn of more than MX$ 211 million pesos.Owned by Fibra Inn and managed by Grupo Hotelero Prisma, the Holiday Inn Ciudad Juarez hotel is franchised by an affiliate of IHG. Fibra Inn, who currently has 15 hotels under the IHG family of brands, is one of the longest-standing owner groups in Mexico. The Holiday Inn brand is part of IHG’s diverse family of brands in nearly 100 countries and territories.

  • Iberia

Iberia is boosting its services to Latin America with three additional weekly flights to both Buenos Aires and Mexico City. As of 27 October, the Spanish airline will raise the number of flights from 14 to 17 times a week to Buenos Aires, which it has served since 1946. Iberia is also scheduling 17 flights a week between Madrid and Mexico City for the 2018/2019 winter season, three more than in the past .Iberia is the leading airline on routes linking Europe and Latin America, with 254 flights each week to destinations in 16 countries. In addition to its Buenos Aires and Mexico City routes, the airline is adding flights to Santiago, Chile (from one daily flight to 10 per week), Rio de Janeiro (from four to five times a week) and San Juan, Puerto Rico (24% more seats than in the 2018 summer season), On 1 October it will also launch daily flights to Guatemala City (currently four flights per week).

 

  • Norwegian

Low-cost Norwegian Air is interested in operating domestic flights within Brazil, as it plans its debut in Latin America’s largest economy in March with a flight between Sao Paolo and England.The airline’s interest was made public by Brazil’s tourism minister Vinicius Lummertz, who said Norwegian can start operating international flights with approval earlier this month from Brazilian flights regulator Anac.Norwegian has not specified the destination in England.Foreign airlines cannot incorporate in Brazil, but Congress is reviewing a proposal to change the law. If approved, Lummertz said, Norwegian could slash domestic flight costs by half.The Brazilian domestic market is dominated by four main airlines, Latam Airlines Group SA, Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes SA, Azul SA and Avianca Holdings SA, all of which posted net losses in the most recent quarter, due to higher oil prices and local currency devaluation.

  • NewCo

NewCo has unveiled its new global structure. In a move that underscores its commitment to cost efficiency, the new GroupM agency formed by MEC and Maxus will remove existing regional management structures. NewCo will not be run at the APAC, EMEA or LATAM levels. Instead, the firm’s top eight global markets that compromise 70 percent of its revenues will report directly to MEC global CEO Tim Castree.  NewCo will be able to lean on GroupM at the regional level for operational support. Remaining regional capabilities will now either move in-market or within client solutions groups. There will also be a new centralized global services structure made up of three groups.

 

 

  • Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines has launched service to Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport from two major California hubs: San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport. Later this fall, Alaska Airlines will also add service from San Diego International Airport to Mexico City, becoming the only airline to serve Mexico City from all three California gateways. The launch to Mexico City kicks off the most significant network expansion in Alaska Air Group’s 85-year history with 29 new routes launching through the end of 2017.The new service is the ninth destination Alaska serves to Mexico from California, including Cancun, Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo, Loreto, Los Cabos, Manzanillo, Mazatlán, Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara.

The property is part of IHG’s diverse family of brands in nearly 100 countries and territories.   • LG Electronics

Ogilvy Mexico, the agency led by Verónica Hernández and Checha Agost Carreño, has expanded its business relationship with giant LG electronics. From now on, Ogilvy Mexico will take over digital communications and social networks of the renowned Korean global technology brand. In Mexico, LG comprises 4 business units (Home Entertainment, Mobile Communications, White Line & Air Conditioning and Business Solutions). Ogilvy Mexico will continue handling PR for LG Mexico.

  • Revlon

Revlon has consolidated its US$400-million plus multi-brand global advertising account with WPP’s Grey and Mediacom. Grey will provide integrated communications services, including traditional and digital advertising and promotion and activation marketing for our brands, including Revlon, Elizabeth Arden, Almay, CND, Cutex, Sinful and many of our key fragrance brands, including Charlie, Britney Spears, Curve, Tapout and Elizabeth Taylor. Mediacom was already handling Revlon brand in the U.S. Now, the agency will have its duties expanded to become global media planning and buying agency of record across all brands.

 

 

  • Michelin

French tire manufacturing Michelin has awarded Havas Media its global media business following a competitive pitch. Incumbent MediaCom participated in the review, AdWeek reported. Michelin spends and around US$100 million annually on ads globally and more than US$25 million in the U.S. Havas will handle media planning and buying duties for all of the company’s major markets including the United States, Mexico, Canada, France, Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and China.

 

 

 

 

  • UBER

Uber app has released its new campaign for Latin America, in which the brand highlights the reasons why more and more people decide to become Uber drivers. The campaign “Manera Diferente” was created to be broadcasted on TV and seeks to portray the potential of becoming a Uber driver. In addition, the app will launch a series of videos that will compile the best moments of different testimonies. Uber’s creative team was inspired by quantitative surveys conducted among drivers and users of the company to develop the campaign. The campaign will include pieces for radio, print, out of home and digital strategy, fully integrated with differentiated formats such as dynamic videos, in-app programmatic media and vertical video formats.

Hyatt Hotels Corporation in conjunction with LATAM Hotel Corporation and GHL Hotels, announced the opening of Hyatt Centric Guatemala City, the brand’s first hotel in Central America. Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, The Hertz Corporation, has signed a three-way and exclusive partnership agreement with Hertz Mexico (operated by Avasa) and Aeroméxico, Mexico’s leading airline. Aeroméxico passengers can now book car rental at the best available rates for Hertz and Firefly in Mexico and with Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty and Firefly in any of the airline’s rest of world destinations, via the airline’s website (Aeromexico.com) and call center.The special rates for Hertz and Firefly in Mexico are also available to customers who present an Aeroméxico boarding pass at the brands’ car rental desks in airports across the country. Copa Airlines, subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A., and Turkish Airlines, both members of Star Alliance, signed a Codeshare Agreement which will offer passengers more flight options with seamless connections through Copa’s Hub of the Americas, in Panama City, and Turkish’s seamless gateway to Europe through the company’s Hub, in Istanbul, Turkey.The strategic Hub of the Americas of Copa Airlines, in Panama City, will allow passengers coming from Istanbul fast and efficiently connect to 74 destinations in America and the Caribbean, including the most important cities of the region. Also with this codeshare agreement, the Latin American passengers traveling with Turkish Airlines through its uniquely positioned hub, Istanbul, that bridges the East and the West, will have more entry options to Europe also Africa, Asia/ Far East and Middle East. This agreement, which complements and expands the route networks of both airlines as well as the connectivity between the continents, will also improve and promote bilateral opportunities for tourism and commercial developments between two countries.

Wyndham Opens Two Wyndham Grand Hotels in Paraguay and Uruguay.With the debut of its upper-upscale Wyndham Grand brand in Asunción, Paraguay, and Montevideo, Uruguay, 10 of the company’s 18 brands operate in 11 countries across the continent.Situated in the centers of these two capital cities, the newly constructed Esplendor Asunción – A Wyndham Grand Hotel and Esplendor Montevideo – A Wyndham Grand Hotel offer business and leisure travelers the signature Wyndham Grand experience.

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) announces the signing of a new-build Holiday Inn hotel in Lima, the capital of Peru. The 19-story, 200-room property will be owned by Grucaba SAC and managed by IHG. The hotel will be situated on Avenida Ricardo Palma in the Miraflores District, an affluent residential area south of downtown Lima known for its upscale dining and shopping.It is scheduled for a Q3 2019 opening.IHG has nearly 1,250 Holiday Inn hotels worldwide, 29 of which are located throughout Latin America. IHG has hotels in nearly 100 countries, with 225 hotels and more than 38,000 rooms throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean.

sprintSprint recently announced that it is teaming up with Telefonica owned Movistar Mexico & El Salvador,to become the first U.S. provider allowing customers to pay for a loved one’s wireless plan in Mexico and El Salvador. According to Alberto Lorente, VP, Multicultural Marketing, Sprint, there will also be an important campaign launched by Telefonica Movistar in México and El Salvador to raise awareness for this new innovative service called “Plan Conectados”. It is a multinational advertising campaign involving the three countries at the same time.

 

  • Kia Motors Argentina

The #dowhatyoucant concept originated with Samsung’s 2016 Olympic campaign ‘The chant’ with the aim to extend the message into an overarching brand philosophy, trading on emotion as well as information. This new approach aims to counteract the negative response to Samsung S7.

descarga (3)Low-cost airline Norwegian Airlines’s expansion plans in Spain are now focusing on Madrid’s Barajas airport, where the low-cost airline wants to offer flights to Latin America. The announcement represents the latest move in Norwegian’s ongoing battle with Iberia. In recent months, each company has sought to chip away at the other’s market.The IAG group, which includes British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus, announced a month ago that it was creating a new brand, Level, to cover flights to the Americas from Barcelona’s El Prat airport, beginning in June.

  • Aeromexico 

descarga (5)Aeromexico, Mexico’s global airline, celebrates ten years serving the Argentinian market as the only carrier offering direct daily flights between the two capital cities.In 2016, Mexico ranked Argentina as its fifth largest market in terms of passenger arrivals, representing the second largest market in Latin America. To meet market demand and growth, Aeromexico currently offers seven nonstop flights per week to Argentina during the regular season, with 12 flights per week on high season.The carrier operates the route with two of its Boeing models, the B777 with 277 seats.Thanks to the Aeromexico and Aerolineas Argentinas codeshare agreement signed by these two SkyTeam members, customers are able to travel between Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Cancun on flights that are jointly sold and operated by both carriers.With 20 years and 15 destinations in South America, Aeromexico consolidates its leadership position in Argentina by offering connectivity to 44 destinations in Mexico, 19 in the United States, four in Europe, four in Canada, and three in Asia, strengthening its ties through air connectivity and promoting tourism in both nations.

descarga-2For travelers heading to Latin America, it was recently announced that the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand has opened shop in Argentina, Paraguay and Curacao.Tourists arriving for business or pleasure trips in Central and South America will find Enterprise car rentals available at airport locations in Buenos Aires and Mendoza, Argentina; Asuncion, Paraguay; and Willemstad, Curacao.The car rental company’s growth in Latin America has been part of Enterprise’s global expansion and continued success in the travel industry. In total, the Enterprise, National and Alamo brands can be found in 85 countries across the world, including 29 locations in Latin America.(Check out interview with Entreprise Rent-A-Car’s Lee Broughton).

  • Norwegian Air Shuttle 

descargaNorwegian Air Shuttle is evaluating plans for a base in Buenos Aires with flights from cities including Oslo, London, Paris, Madrid and Barcelona as the next phase of its low-cost expansion strategy.Services to the Argentinian capital could start in 12 months if government permissions are granted.  The Latin American country’s second-biggest city also has the potential to become a domestic hub.South America is attracting outside operators as an economic downturn, weaker local currencies and increased dollar-linked costs squeeze local players.Qatar Airways said in July it would pay $613 million for up to 10 percent of Latam Airlines Group SA, the region’s biggest carrier, while China’s HNA Group Co. last year acquired a 24 percent stake in Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras SA for $450 million. Colombia’s Avianca Holdings SA and Avianca Brasil are seeking separate partners while planning to merge in the longer term.Norwegian Air is still awaiting permission from the U.S. Department of Transportation to use its Irish subsidiary for trans-Atlantic U.S. flights and has also applied for such rights for its U.K. unit.

  • Western Union

descarga-3Legacy remittance provider Western Union will nearly double the size of its retail locations in Mexico through a new partnership that will bring Western Union services to many locations of OXXO, the country’s largest convenience store chain.Now, OXXO customers will be able to receive funds via a national hotline, in-store phones, or kiosks. As a result of the partnership, Western Union’s network in Mexico will nearly double to 26,200 locations.This is part of what seems like an ongoing Western Union push to expand in Mexico. Western Union recently partnered with Walmart in Mexico to expand its retail pickup locations.Mexico is the fourth-largest remittance recipient worldwide and the most popular destination from the US.  That means that growing its presence there could help Western Union increase its consumer-to-consumer revenue in the Latin America region, thereby growing a key segment of its business.

vvvvvInterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) continues to ramp up its growth with the expansion of its brands in the Caribbean, Latin America and Mexico. Set to open as Latin America’s first, Candlewood Suites Queretaro-Juriquilla in north-central Mexico offers convenient access to the Soccer Stadium and downtown Queretaro.Also contributing to IHG’s Latin American growth is the signing of two new-build Holiday Inn Express properties in Peru. In Paraguay, the inaugural Holiday Inn Express will join Crowne Plaza in the capital city of Asuncion. On the books in the Dominican Republic is the InterContinental Santo Domingo that will expand that brand’s presence within the Caribbean.By the end of next year, additional IHG properties are set to open in Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador and the Bahamas.

5XrEjv1Z_400x400Best Western Hotels & Resorts aims to build 30 hotels in Latin America in the next two years, with an objective of doubling its current number of 15 properties. Best Western Latin American expansion is powered primarily by two countries, Brazil and Colombia. Brazil has 13 hotels in the pipeline in the next 18 months, including four (4) Best Western, Seven(7) Best Western PLUS and Two (2) Best Western PREMIER.Aside from those hotels already in construction, negotiations are underway with some 40 investors for additional projects, including prospects for Vīb, Premier Collection, Executive Residency and PREMIER. Colombia has eight hotels in the pipeline, most of which will be PLUS properties. Locations include the capital city of Bogota, as well as popular beach destinations such as Cartagena, Santa Marta and San Andres. The island of San Andres is a Caribbean hot spot known for its seven visible shades of blue in the ocean. Ongoing negotiations in the region include potential Vīb properties in Bogota and Medellin, Colombia’ssecond-most important city. Best Western Hotels & Resorts aims to secure ten properties in Colombia in the next 24 months. Dorothy Dowling, SVP of Marketing and Sales for Best Western International, tells Portada that most marketing efforts will be targeting the business traveler as well as marketing of loyalty programs. Initiative is Best Western’s media agency.

descarga (1)American Airlines has appointed MDC Partners’ Crispin Porter + Bogusky andGroupM’s Mediacom as its new creative and media agencies, respectively. The appointments were made following formal review in which CP+B and GroupM’s MediaCom defeated rival pitches from IPG, Publicis Groupe and Omnicom Group. The assignments are global.The incumbent agency was TM, part of Interpublic’s McCann Worldgroup. TM had serviced the account since the early 1980s and did not defend the account. Instead, Martin Agency, also part of IPG, pitched the business.American Airlines spent about US$30 million on ads last year, according to Kantar Media, and that number is likely to increase as the airline has just absorbed U.S. Airways.Read more.

descargaPharma and packaged-goods giant Johnson & Johnson has selected J3 as its media agency around the world after a quick review across all of its consumer, pharmaceutical and medical-device businesses and brands. Among the shops competing were WPP’s MEC, Omnicom’s OMD and J3, the dedicated J&J group that Interpublic Group of Companies created within UM.J3 previously handled some of the international work, while OMD supported parts of the business in Latin America and Asia, and MEC supported parts of Europe.When the review began, the company said the North American market would not be included. Months later, the company moved its US$1 billion U.S. business from OMD back to J3. OMD had won the business from J3 only a year earlier.J&J reported US$2.6 billion in advertising spending in its 2014 annual report.

  • InterContinental Hotels Group

The eight–story extended stay hotel includes 129 suites and opens following an investment of more than US $12 million by Hotel Royal Plaza, S.A. de C.V.The Staybridge Suites brand has seen strong growth in Mexico with recent openings in Monterrey, Chihuahua, Guadalajara and Queretaro. This hotel marks IHG’s sixth property in Puebla and the first Staybridge Suites hotel in the city, according to IHG.

cr570_15Agency Gravity 3 will open a branch in Costa Rica to cater the needs of the entire Central American region. The agency was born in Mexico and has representatives in Colombia and Chile. Costa Rica office will start operating from 1 October.
