  • Visa

Visa announced a strategic investment in YellowPepper, a US-based mobile payments provider in an effort to provide its digital service in Latin America. This investment will be the first of its kind in the region and reinforces a shared vision for increasing usage of mobile payments throughout Latin American and the Caribbean.With this agreement, Visa will focus on growing opportunities for tokenized payments, increasing access to Visa APIs, and expanding the usage of push payments via Visa Direct.Additionally, YellowPepper will become a Visa Token Service Provider, allowing it to offer Visa’s secure, digital payment token services, via any Internet-connected device.Visa has targeted the Latin American market since it remains largely underpenetrated and thus provides abundant scope for Visa’s growth.

 

 

  • Yuyo

Shaftesbury-based drink brand Yuyo will export its range of Latin American-inspired drink infusions to Brazil this year.The company stocks a range of yerba mate drink infusions across the UK through retailers such as Ocado, Whole Foods and Revital as well as selling online.The business already exports to seven countries including US, Sweden and France, and boosted its international orders by 42% between 2015 and 2017.Exports make up 40% of the company’s £100,000 annual turnover and founders Rosie Marteau and Charles Grummit plan to increase this further by exporting to Brazil in the next three months and to target Australia in 2019.

 

 

  • IHG

InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) has unveiled plans to open a new midscale hotel in Mexico with the recent signing of the first avid hotels property, which will be located in Fresnillo, Zacatecas. Executives from both companies celebrated the signing in a private ceremony in Mexico City. The first avid hotels location in Mexico will be strategically located at the Paseo del Mineral Avenue at the city’s main entrance in an area known for its commercial and business activity. The hotel will be a four storey, new-build hotel with 95 guest rooms and is expected to open in mid-2019.Jorge Apaez, chief operating officer, Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean, IHG, said: “The first signing in Mexico of IHG’s new high-quality midscale brand demonstrates further momentum for avid hotels. New hotel signings continue to exceed expectations, and total more than 100 avid hotels across the US, Canada and now Mexico, almost one every other day since launch last year. This latest development demonstrates that owners believe in the strength of the avid hotels brand and the power of IHG.”

  • FCA

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed the FCA group’s product plans for the coming years, which included a strong focus on its ‘global brands’ like Alfa Romeo, Jeep, Maserati and Ram. Marchionne confirmed those brands will continue, though will be limited in terms of their budget.Chrysler will “continue to be relevant in the United States”, though will become a “people carrier brand” .Meanwhile, Fiat will focus primarily on the Latin American market, due to that region’s high uptake of cheaper and less sophisticated vehicles, though it will occupy a “more exclusive area” of the European market, namely city cars and electrified vehicles.

 

  • Aeroméxico

When Donald Trump was running for president, as a strategy to get more votes, he threatened to build a wall on the US-Mexico border if elected. He won, and became president of the United States of America and announced through his social media, that the construction of the first sections of the border wall had already begun. Aeroméxico, a proudly Mexican airline, showed its disapproval with a direct and very clear message: it does not matter how high the wall is, how long it takes to build it or the money spent on it; we can always fly over it. The message is reflected in OGILVY Mexico latest campaign for Aeroméxico called Sobrevuelos. IPG´s UM is Aeromexico´s media agency of record.

Southwest Airlines will start cargo service to four destinations – Mexico City, Cancun, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta – this May, with plans to add more markets. Leading hotel group Radisson has announced the opening of a new property in Curicó, Chile.The new Radisson Hotel Curicó features a modern design with exceptional amenities. Located in Curicó, the hotel is minutes from beautiful vineyards and the many attractions in the nearby commercial district.

IHG on February 20 announced that avid hotels, its new high-quality midscale brand, is now available for franchising in Mexico.The launch of the brand in Mexico closely follows the introduction of avid hotels in the U.S. and Canada last fall, where the company has already signed 75 franchise agreements. This milestone further demonstrates the brand’s rapid start and growth potential, according to IHG.The franchise fee for the brand will be five percent of gross rooms revenue, and all avid hotels franchise agreements for Mexico executed before Sept. 30, 2018, will be eligible for a two-point franchise fee discount in year one and a one-point franchise fee discount in year two. This incentive can only be earned if the hotel opens by Sept. 30, 2020.

 

  • Copa Holdings

Copa Holdings continued its strong operating momentum in the fourth quarter of 2017 in LatamThe number of flights, passengers, and miles flown were up, and the cost to fly was down, driving solid profitability. Stronger results were driven by a growing fleet, which allows for more available revenue miles. But costs were also down after management adjusted how long the company would depreciate aircraft. Here are the operating highlights to understand for the quarter:In January, Copa took delivery of a 737-800 aircraft, increasing the fleet size to 101. There isn’t a lot differentiating airlines, but Copa Holdings has distinguished itself as one of the best operators in the world.

  • Shell

Energy giant Shell has launched a global review of its creative and media business, after working with WPP-owned agencies JWT and MediaCom for decades. Incumbent MediaCom built ‘Team Media for Shell’ designed to handle planning and buying for the firm’s global retail business as well as its corporate and recruitment advertising when it won the global account. Shell is estimated to spend around US$200m on marketing each year.

 

 

 

  • Formula One

Formula One has appointed Wavemaker and Brainlabs to run its respective traditional and digital media accounts following a competitive review. Media was handled in-house prior to the review. WPP’s Wavemaker will handle all traditional media-planning and buying, while Brainlabs has been tasked to handle digital media.Each part of the media business is worth about half of the US $40m budget.

  • Netflix

Netflix has announced its quarterly results, and they plan to increase their ad spend from US $1.3 billion to $2 billion in 2018. Netflix is a major global advertiser, particularly in the digital category. The ad spend is producing a positive ROI: “We’re taking marketing spend up a little faster than revenue for this year (from about US $1.3 billion to approximately US $2 billion) because our testing results indicate this is wise, ” Netflix Q4 earnings release says. In terms of what this means for Latin America, Netflix does not disclose regional numbers. However, for 2018, they plan to add more Latin American subscribers than ever with 50 original productions from this region. “A good story told well is a global product”, said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix.

 

 

  • Dream Hotel Group

Dream Hotel Group signed three new hotels in Mexico and Central America. The Unscripted Belize is slated to open in late 2018 while the Dream Belize and Unscripted Tulum are set to open in 2020. Unscripted Belize—the first of the two new Belize properties—will have 24 beachfront cabanas near the Caribbean Sea. Belize’s second upcoming property—Dream Belize—will have 260 rooms. These will include 100 guestrooms and suites, 120 hotel condos and 40 branded residences. Both properties are owned and developed by Luke Chadwick.   The Unscripted brand will make its first foray into Mexico with its upcoming hotel in Tulum. Dream Hotel Group’s development pipeline has more than 30 hotel and resort projects worldwide across its brands Dream, Time, The Chatwal and Unscripted scheduled to open over the next four years.

  • Radisson Blu

Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group is expanding its portfolio in Costa Rica with the country’s first Radisson Blu branded hotel. Construction on the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa Papagayo, Costa Rica is scheduled for late 2018, with an opening date set for December 2020. The upcoming Radisson Blu resort will join Carlson Rezidor’s three hotels in Cost Rica: Radisson San Jose-Costa Rica, Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, San Jose Aeropuerto, Costa Rica and Park Inn by Radisson San Jose, Costa Rica. Carlson Rezidor will add the upcoming hotel to Radisson Blu’s portfolio of 300 operating hotels in 69 countries mostly outside of the U.S., including in Europe, Africa and Asia.

 

  • HSBC

HSBC, the British banking and financial services company, has launched a review of its global media account.The incumbent on the account is GroupM’s Mindshare. ID Comms, the U.K.-based media consulting company, will be running the pitch. It is thought the bank spends about US$400m a year on media but the bank does not disclose its spend.

IHG announced the opening of the new-build, 179-room Holiday Inn Lima Airport hotel, just five minutes from Jorge Chavez Lima International Airport. The two-tower, eight-story property is the second brand IHG has introduced in the capital city of Lima.Lima is home to numerous multinational companies making it one of the Latin America’s most dynamic financial markets. As Peru continues to grow, travelers can count on two IHG hotels in its capital city, Crowne Plaza Lima and Holiday Inn Lima Airport, along with six hotels that will be opening across Peru over the next few years.The Holiday Inn brand is part of IHG’s diverse family of brands in nearly 100 countries and territories.

 

  • SpotSee

SpotSee, global leader in shock and vibration monitoring through low-cost connectivity and data, and parent to established brands such as ShockWatch®, SpotBot, ShockLog® and OpsWatch, has announced the opening of a brand new office in Sorocaba, located just outside of São Paulo, Brazil. The office was opened to better serve SpotSee’s clients who have operations in Latin America. The office is located at Rua Vidal de Negreiros, nº 108, Sala 17, Vila Assis, 18025-160 Sorocoba – SP and is dedicated to providing sales and technical support to Latin America. Roberto Pinheiro will be in charge of the new facility as Central and South America General Manager, giving the new facility an experienced leader from the beginning.The Brazil office will aim to provide a better overall experience to SpotSee customers and users in Latin America.

sprintSprint recently announced that it is teaming up with Telefonica owned Movistar Mexico & El Salvador,to become the first U.S. provider allowing customers to pay for a loved one’s wireless plan in Mexico and El Salvador. According to Alberto Lorente, VP, Multicultural Marketing, Sprint, there will also be an important campaign launched by Telefonica Movistar in México and El Salvador to raise awareness for this new innovative service called “Plan Conectados”. It is a multinational advertising campaign involving the three countries at the same time.

The #dowhatyoucant concept originated with Samsung’s 2016 Olympic campaign ‘The chant’ with the aim to extend the message into an overarching brand philosophy, trading on emotion as well as information. This new approach aims to counteract the negative response to Samsung S7.

The announcement represents the latest move in Norwegian’s ongoing battle with Iberia. In recent months, each company has sought to chip away at the other’s market.The IAG group, which includes British Airways, Iberia, Vueling and Aer Lingus, announced a month ago that it was creating a new brand, Level, to cover flights to the Americas from Barcelona’s El Prat airport, beginning in June.

descarga (7)InterContinental Hotels Group is opening the 102-room Candlewood Suites Celaya hotel.Located in Celaya’s eastern commercial area, the hotel is ideal for both business and leisure travellers to Guanajuato.It will be IHG’s second Candlewood Suites property in Mexico, joining the Candlewood Suites Queretaro-Juriquilla hotel which opened November 2016.The Candlewood Suites Celaya hotel opened following a US$10 million investment by its owner OVQ Celaya.

Diamond will oversee brand awareness and manage North American PR efforts for Marriott International’s Caribbean and Latin America brands, for the purpose of driving awareness and travel to hotel properties in that region.Miami-based Diamond manages PR efforts for more than two-dozen resorts throughout the U.S., Caribbean, Central/South America and Europe.

  • Safilo Group

descarga (2)Italian eyewear manufacturer and distributer Safilo Group, which distributes licensed brands including Fendi and Dior, has re-entered the Latin American market of Argentina after a hiatus.Safilo has closed a distribution agreement with OCSA SLR of Messrs. Cosentino. Through its new terms with OSCA, Safilo plans to further develop and strengthen its business in Latin America countries.Safilo’s re-entrance into Argentina is part of the brand’s larger development plans for the Latin American region, as outlined in its 2020 Strategic Plan. Safilo has also forged strong relationships with consumers in the Brazilian and Mexican markets and is planning on similar successes in Argentina, and the whole of Latin America as it continues to set a foundation for growth in the region.

  • Cath Kidston

descarga (1)The vintage fashion and home retailer Cath Kidston is set to open stand-alone stores and concessions in Latin America as it presses on with its global expansion plans.The retailer will initially concentrate on launching operations in Mexico and Chile.However, Cath Kidston chief executive Kenny Wilson is eyeing expansion across the region and as far as Brazil.The retailer, which recently launched a brand collaboration with Disney, is planning to enter the region with stand-alone stores and concessions following indications from online sales in Latin America that the brand has a market there.Cath Kidston has recruited Under Armour’s head of international franchising Michael Engelhaupt to lead the venture.

  • Holiday Inn Express

c58b279ae8516d7abd38a0eddd4b7946_400x400InterContinental Hotels Group has signed the Holiday Inn Express Asuncion Aviadores hotel, the first Holiday Inn Express hotel in Paraguay.The new-build 120-room hotel will be centrally located in Paraguay’s capital city of Asuncion and joins IHG’s Crowne Plaza Asuncion hotel, already open in Paraguay.Expected to be open by the end of 2018, the hotel will be in close proximity to the World Trade Centre Asuncion, Shopping del Sol and Paseo La Galeria.

 

 

  • Radisson Blu  

02Radisson Blu announced the opening of Radisson Blu Santiago La Dehesa, its first location in Chile. The opening of this hotel follows Radisson Blu Sao Paulo and Radisson Blu Belo Horizonte, Savassi in Brazil which opened earlier this year.
