What: American Express will launch its first Worldwide Media Review in over a decade.
Why it matters: After the evaluation, AmEx will likely issue an RFP for media planning and buying.

American Express is launching a worldwide media review, marking the first time the world’s second-largest credit card company has done so in more than a decade.

Speaking on the review, AmEx VP of public affairs Elizabeth Crosta said “We are evaluating the way we buy media globally. With this evaluation, it is likely we will issue an RFP for media planning and buying. Our incumbent agencies would be invited to pitch. This is part of an effort to drive greater marketing efficiency and effectiveness across our business.”

Since Crosta declined to clarify whether AmEx will be managing the review internally; details surrounding the review remain scant. However, media agencies from the world’s six biggest advertising holding companies are expected to be invited to pitch, including Mindshare, who declined to comment on the review.

This news comes twenty years after the primary incumbent on the business, WPPs Mindshare, first won the media buying account away from Ogilvy & Mather and more than 13 years after it last successfully defended against IPG’s Initiative and Dentsu’s Carat.Resultado de imagen para american express

The news also follows American Express’ decision to move its global creative account into Dentsu’s Mcgarrybowen from Ogilvy & Mather last June, which ended a relationship that lasted more than 50 years. That shift was a major blow to Ogilvy, which had been the lead agency on the account handling the media planning and buying for Amex since 1962.

AMEX spent roughly US$300 million on media alone last year, according to Kantar Media.

What: Visa, MasterCard and American Express proposed using “digital tokens” worldwide, instead of account numbers for processing purchases made online and with mobile devices.
Why is it important: The use of tokens would help to reduce fraud by providing uniformity. Tokens would also complement EMV-chip technology, which improves security against fraud as it authenticates credit and debit card transactions. Cardholders security would be enhanced with “digital tokens” because its use would be limited for specific environments.

Visa, MasterCard and American Express have proposed a new global standard to enhance the security of digital payments and simplify the purchasing experience when shopping on a mobile phone, tablet or personal computer. This standard involves the use of “digital tokens” instead of account numbers for processing purchases made online and with mobile devices.

With a token, consumers will no longer be required to enter an actual account number when shopping online or on a smart device, as tokens would be the digital equivalent of magnetic stripes on the back of plastic bank cards that contain customer information. Tokens will provide an additional layer of security and eliminate the need for merchants, digital wallet operators or others to store account numbers.

To ensure consistency across the globe, the proposed standard used to generate tokens would be based on existing industry standards and would be available to all payment networks and other payment participants. Once a standard is agreed to and implemented, issuers, merchants or digital wallet providers would be able to request a token, and it will be possible to restrict how tokens are used with a specific merchant, device, transaction or category of transactions.

Over the next weeks, this global framework will be presented to stakeholders, partners and independent industry bodies so as to align and further advance the standard.

What: Time Inc. will soon be inking a deal to purchase American Express’ luxury publications.
Why is it important: Banking regulations discourage licensed banks from participating in non-financial businesses, which is the reason behind AmEx’s magazines forthcoming sale.

According to sources such as AdWeek and The Wall Street Journal, and although neither side has yet publicly acknowledged the impending sale, Time Inc. may be close to a deal to buy American Express’ luxury publishing division.

Negotiations reportedly began to take place after banking regulations –that limit American Express ability to get involved in non-banking activities– required that, being AmEx a bank holding company, exited noncore businesses, even if the publishing division was a small business given the company’s size. Rumors have escalated after the arrival, last week, of Time Inc.’s new CEO, Joe Ripp.

The five high-end magazines Time Inc. would be acquiring are Food & Wine, Travel + Leisure, Departures, Executive Travel and Black Ink. It is still not clear how much would Time pay for the titles. Adding AmEx chic magazines to Time’s current 130 titles (Time, Fortune, Life, Golf Magazine, InStyle, People, Sports Illustrated, etc.) would further allow a more targeted communication towards upscale consumers.

It is expected, however, that Time Warner Inc., Time Inc.’s parent company, relaunches the publishing unit as a stand-alone company in the near future.

WSJ’s William Launder highlights the fact that Time and American Express have a long-standing relationship, because due to an arrangement dating to the early 1990s, Time handles functions like subscription fulfillment and other back-office services on behalf of American Express.
