Sports Marketing Bits: FDP, NBCUniverso. Sun Broadcast Group-Yahoo Deportes, LAFC replaces Chivas

Major developments in the (Hispanic) sports marketing arena. Last week the major news was that Telemundo (NBCUniversal) took over Spanish-language broadcast rights to the 2018 Soccer World Cup. Joe Uva, Chairman, Hispanic Enterprises and Content at NBCUniversal,  said that mun2 will "not be a pure sports network". mun2 will relaunch on February 1, 2015 under the new name of NBCUniverso. Radio rights holder FDP unveils 2018 World Cup Logo

FDPFútbol de Primera (FDP), the official Spanish-language U.S. Radio rights holder of the FIFA World Cup™ unveiled  its  new composite company logo for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Andrés Cantor, Chairman of Fútbol de Primera, and also Telemundo sports caster, welcomed the new logo stating, “every four years we fall in love with an emblem that becomes the most visible marketing tool on earth. FDP Radio is honored to be able to use the official emblem within our official partner composite logo. It has always been a great asset and tradition for our company that shall continue for the next 4 years”, added Cantor. Fútbol de Primera is the only U.S. broadcaster to retain its FIFA partnership rights after the 2014 Finals event in Brazil. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ will be the fifth consecutive World Cup tournament for Fútbol de Primera, which holds exclusive terrestrial, and satellite radio rights for all FIFA related Events and also the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar.

Spanish-language Sports Radio cast

Sun Broadcast Group and Gow Media have entered into a new partnership that will provide Spanish-language sports updates to stations across the country. The new offering is called Yahoo! Deportes Radio. Sun Broadcast’s Hispanic division, Sun Latino, will handle advertising and affiliate sales. Gow Media, owner of Yahoo! Sports Radio, will handle production and distribution from its facilities in Houston.

Sports Radio, will handle production and distribution from its facilities in Houston. Sun Broadcast Group CEO Jason Bailey said, “I’m so impressed by what David Gow, Craig Larson, and their team have accomplished over the last few years. Gow Media’s Yahoo! Sports Radio has been a huge success by every measure. I’m thrilled to be working with them to bring the same quality of local, interactive sports reports to the Hispanic community.” Gow Media CEO David Gow said, “The Hispanic market represents a new, big opportunity for us. Jason Bailey and his team at Sun Latino have significant relationships and expertise in the Hispanic market, and we are confident that Sun can make Yahoo! Deportes Radio a market leader.”

Hugo Baltam, Senior Director Multicultural Content at ESPN

ESPN has announced that SportsCenter coordinating producer Hugo Balta will take on a new role as Senior Director, Multicultural Content for the ESPN Digital & Print Media group beginning December 1. In this new role, Balta will help raise the quality, profile and delivery of diverse newsgathering and storytelling. He will report directly to Vice President & Executive Editor Kevin Jackson as well as advise Executive Vice President John Kosner on business strategies to better serve the domestic Hispanic audience. Balta’s priorities will be to target both English and Spanish speaking U.S. Hispanics across ESPN’s digital and print platforms. He will also be responsible for expanding ESPN’s efforts to serve sports fans worldwide by partnering with editorial leaders in Mexico and Latin America and across ESPN Deportes, helping grow coverage of sports in the Americas, drive native content for social media, and recruit diverse editorial talent to the team.

LAFC replaces Chivas

Three days after MLS soccer club Chivas USA shut down, MLS commissioner Don Garber on set Southern California soccer on a new path by introducing the owners of the tentatively-named Los Angeles Football Club, which will take a field to be determined in 2017. Major League Soccer announced its plan to add a second Los Angeles-area franchise with the formation of the Los Angeles Football Club. The LAFC will join the league in the 2017 season. A consortium comprising at least 22 investors will be led by Vietnamese-American businessman Henry Nguyen, who’s the new franchise’s managing partner. He’s working with Los Angeles Dodgers and Golden State Warriors co-owner Peter Guber (executive chairman) and Tom Penn (president), a one-time NBA executive, attorney and agent who co-founded the Sports Leadership Institute. Garber said Thursday that he met Nguyen at one of Penn’s conferences.That strategy is keyed on creating a genuine rival for the LA Galaxy, an MLS original that has won four league championships.
