WHAT: The Mexican National Soccer team won 5-1 against New Zealand in the first leg of their 2014 Soccer World Cup playoff. After this result, Mexico’s qualification is very likely.
WHY IT MATTERS: Mexico’s 2014 Soccer World Cup qualification is very important to the (Hispanic) marketing and media sector as marketers will have a much bigger incentive to increase expenditures related to the 2014 World Cup if  Mexico qualifies.

The Mexican National team made a giant step towards qualifying to the 2014 Brazil Soccer World Cup. The “Tri” won 5-1 against the New Zealand squad in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca. Now Mexico has to play the back leg of the play-off in Wellington New Zealand, next Wednesday November 20. New Zealand wil have to win by 4-0 or by a goal difference of more than 4 goals if Mexico scores to make it to Brazil, a very unlikely result.

Soccer“Se ve, se siente, Brasil esta presente” (“You can see it, you can feel it, Brazil is present”) the Univision match presenter said at the end of the match. TV spot advertisers at the Univision broadcasted (Spanish) match included Crown Imports’ Corona Extra (the match was presented by Corona Extra), Coca Cola, Allstate, Mc Donald’s, Lowe’s,  Verizon Wireless and Latin Grammy’s. Mexico’s very likely qualification is a big boost for U.S. Hispanic media and marketing sector as 70% of the Hispanic population is of  Mexican origin. Major brand marketers will much more likely endorse World Cup related media and events if Mexico qualifies to the tournament.
