Venezuelan newspapers were running out of newsprint at the end of April. Due to the lack of domestic mills, Venezuela's newspapers must import all their newsprint. However, newsprint is not among the 6,000 items that President Hugo Chávez's administration allows to be imported. Many analysts criticize Chávez for not including newsprint among the “importable” items, and claim that he uses this measure to control the press.
