The European Union approved a new regulation that forbids advertising of tobacco in print media, radio and on the Internet. Sports and entertainment events sponsored by tobacco brands will not be allowed. France and Germany opposed the new regulation, which went into effect on January 1, 2003. However, the European Union gave the National parliaments until July 31, 2005 to incorporate the rule into their National Laws. Outdoor, movie, and indirect advertising (e.g. T-shirts) will still be allowed. European newspaper publishers complained that the new rule would considerably reduce their advertisintg revenues, estimating a loss of 100 million euros. According to Ignacio Benito, president of AEDE (Asociación de Editores de Diarios Españoles), Spanish
dailies and their weekend supplements will loose approximately 15 million euros in ad revenues as a result of the new restrictions.
