Following the rocky closing of the long-standing daily, the San Juan Star, a new English-language daily is stepping in to fill the void.
The Puerto Rico Daily Sun began publishing last week, aided by a $1 million cash injection from the Puerto Rican Department of Labor and Human Resources, meant to offset the costs of salaries and benefits.
The paper’s ownership structure is cooperative, with 90 former employees of the San Juan Star committing fund to get the paper going.
The paper began distributing with a circulation of 15,000 copies, 2,000 of which are going to paid subscribers. The cover price of the Puerto Rico Daily Sun is $0.50 Monday-Saturday and $1.50 on Sundays.
