Chilean engineer Robert Fuenzalida has been named executive director of Miami based Grupo de Diarios América (GDA). Fuenzalida, who replaced interim director Milton Cerda, has worked for the Chilean paper El Mercurio, founding member of the GDA, for the past 25 years in operations, projects and business development. The GDA is an advertising sales network created bya group of majorLatin American newspapers.
Miami based ad-sales representation firm Charney/Palacios, part of the Publicitas Promotion Network, will continue to hold the exclusive sales rights for GDA's network of newspapers.
According to Fuenzalida, the GDA's main goals are to strengthen its influence and position in the multimedia market and create new advertising opportunities. “Right now, we sell advertising as a group to multinationals in the United States and we have a deal pending with Ford in Europe. Multinational companies can buy ads for one price in all or any number of the GDA's member papers.” Fuenzalida also announced the GDA's plans to develop a new website. Regarding new members, Fuenzalida said, “We are looking at countries that are not yet represented in the GDA. There's Paraguay and Bolivia, as well as Central America and the Caribbean, but we're not in a hurry to get bigger.”
Fuenzalida was responsible for the creation of the Asociación Técnica de Diarios Latinoamericanos in 1983 and later the GDA.
