Mexican newspaper El Universal (circ. 170,000) went through organizational changes at the beginning of July. El Universal is published by El Universal Compania Periodística Nacional, who also publishes El Gráfico and El M, with a combined circulation of more than 450,000. In addition the privately held company publishes a local edition of The Miami Herald in association with Knight Ridder. CEO Juan Francisco Ealy named Juan Francisco Ealy Jr. executive vice president of the company. Pablo Suinaga Lanz-Duret was named vice president. On the editorial side, Roberto Rock Lechón, was named vice president and general editorial director, and Ignacio Rodríguez Reyna, general adjunct editorial director. Óscar Hinojosa was named editorial director of El Universal, Gráfico and El M. El Universal Compania Periodistica Nacional also publishes the wire service El Servicio Universal de Noticias –with almost 200 subscribers in Mexico and the US– and the website El Universal Online. The company announced in mid August that it launched a one-year debt program for up to 120 million Mexican pesos (US $11.2 million) to finance expansion projects. In a first step, the company sold 60 million pesos in 28-day notes. The placement marks the first time a newspaper publisher in Mexico has tapped the local debt market, which has been growing recently with interest rates at record lows.
