The circulation of newspaper market leaders Clarin and La Nación declined by 16% between June 2001 and June 2002. La Voz del Interior (Córdoba) and Los Andes (Mendoza), both minority owned by Spain's Grupo Correo/Prensa Española, lost 21% and 13% of their circulation, respectively. In the magazine market, the health category saw a decline in circulation of 33% between August 2001 and August 2002. As of August 2002, Buena Salud lead the category with a circulation of 29,694. Circulation in the women's category declined by 41.6% (Para Ti, category leader, had a circulation of 25,623 in August 2002). The current events category saw a decline of approximately 25% (Noticias 36,824). Entertainment magazines saw their circulation shrink by around 30% (Pronto 78.135; Caras 51.355; Gente 50.276).

…and plummeting advertising sales

The economic crisis is having a profound impact on the Argentinean newspaper and magazine industries. According to a local group, advertising spending during the first half of 2002 decreased a lot compared to the same period in 2001. Advertising sales in national newspapers amounted to US $138 million compared with US $638.1 million in 2001. For regional and local newspapers advertising sales during the first semester of 2002 were at US $18.5 million (US $110.2 million in the first half of 2001). Magazine advertising amounted to US $29.1 million (US $191.2 million).
