TikTok travel: A new search-driven discovery model

TikTok travel is rapidly redefining how users discover and plan trips, according to the latest analysis from Orange 142, LLC, a division of Direct Digital Holdings, through its Social Media Council report. The study explores how travel content performs within TikTok’s increasingly search-driven ecosystem, where users actively look for inspiration and make decisions in real time.

The findings highlight a fundamental shift: TikTok is no longer just an entertainment platform—it is becoming a key discovery engine for travel, where visibility depends on how quickly and effectively content delivers value.

Short-form videos dominate TikTok travel performance

One of the clearest takeaways from the report is the dominance of short-form video in TikTok travel content. Orange 142 analyzed the top 20 organic videos appearing in TikTok’s “Top” tab for the keyword “travel” during a January snapshot, focusing on publicly available metrics such as views, length, saves, shares, and comments.

The results were striking. Sixty percent of the top-ranking videos were 15 seconds or shorter. These videos averaged approximately 1.5 million views—four times more than longer videos included in the dataset.

This reinforces a key principle for TikTok travel strategies: brevity is not just preferred, it is rewarded.

Saves and shares outweigh comments

Beyond video length, the report underscores the importance of engagement signals that go beyond traditional metrics. In TikTok travel content, saves and shares play a significantly larger role in visibility than comments.

Across the 20 videos analyzed:

  • Average views exceeded 1 million per video

  • Saves reached nearly 16,000 per video

  • Shares averaged around 14,500

  • Comments remained below 400 per video

Notably, saves occurred at more than 40 times the volume of comments. Additionally, 80 percent of the ten most-viewed videos ranked in the top half of the dataset for shares. Meanwhile, comment volume showed no consistent correlation with higher views.

This suggests that TikTok travel success depends less on conversation and more on utility—content that users want to revisit or share.

Intent-driven users are reshaping travel decisions

The report emphasizes that TikTok travel behavior is rooted in user intent. People are not just passively consuming videos—they are actively searching, comparing, and curating ideas for future trips.

As Calvin Scharffs, Vice President of Marketing at Orange 142, explains: “TikTok is influencing travel decisions earlier than many brands realize. Users are searching with intent, comparing options, and saving ideas in real time. That changes how brands need to show up. The content that performs delivers value quickly and moves people closer to a decision.”

This shift means that TikTok travel content must do more than inspire—it must inform quickly and clearly.

Creator size matters less than clarity and shareability

Another key insight from the analysis is that scale is not a prerequisite for success in TikTok travel. Half of the top-performing videos came from creators with fewer than 10,000 followers.

Additionally, the report found no measurable difference in performance between videos featuring people and those focused purely on scenery. This indicates that format and production style are less important than the clarity of the message and the ease with which content can be shared.

The January snapshot ultimately reinforces a simple but powerful takeaway: in TikTok travel, clarity and shareability outweigh audience size and even content format.

A new playbook for TikTok travel content

Taken together, the findings from Orange 142 point to a new playbook for brands and creators operating in the TikTok travel space:

  • Prioritize short, concise videos

  • Focus on delivering immediate value

  • Optimize for saves and shares, not comments

  • Design content for search-driven discovery

  • Emphasize clarity over scale

As TikTok continues to evolve into a search-first platform, TikTok travel strategies will need to adapt accordingly. The brands that succeed will be those that understand how users discover, evaluate, and save travel ideas—often in just a matter of seconds.
