Gannett (NYSE:GCI) announced (read press release here) that USA TODAY is teaming up with Puerto Rico's El Nuevo Día to launch a USA TODAY Puerto Rico Edition. The newspaper will be produced and written by El Nuevo Día journalists and its publication starts today (Monday, February 22, 2010).  

USA Today sees an interesting audience in the U.S. mainland tourists and business people who travel to Puerto Rico. The newspaper will print from Monday through Friday and will be available in hotels and in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico.

In addition to the News, Money, Sports and Life sections, the Puerto Rico edition will include two pages that will offer a unique perspective of the local events in the area, like politics, economy, society, sports, entertainment, and the Puerto Rican tourism experience. The content for these two pages will be translated to Spanish from

It also allows us to expand our business areas in a competitive market and help promote economic activity," said David L. Hunke, president and publisher of USA TODAY.

The president of El Nuevo Día, one of the Spanish language daily newspapers with the largest circulation in the U.S., María Eugenia Ferré Rangel, also said the alliance will allow her newspaper to reach a greater audience and serve the touristsduring his or her stay in Puerto Rico.

USA Today has a similar partnership in Cancun, Mexico.
