Salt Lake Tribune Launches New Hispanic Pub; Discontinues Fronteras

Citing growing demand, The Salt Lake Tribune announces the launch of Ahora Utah, a new weekly replacing Fronteras. Portada speaks with deputy editor Tim Fitzpatrick.

Utah’s Salt Lake Tribune, published by Media News Group,  has announced that it is discontinuing its long running Spanish-language weekly Fronteras, and will be launching a new Spanish-language weekly Ahora Utah, to begin publication in early June. The free paper will distribute 20,000 copies weekly through racks and stores.

According to deputy editor Tim Fitzpatrick, Fronteras format of covering mostly Latin American news, with some translated content from the Tribune, was not quite meeting the demands of the area’s growing Hispanic community. “Ahora Utah will offer more hard news than Fronteras,” says Fitzpatrick.

The paper will include locally written articles on community news, sports and entertainment: “Obviously immigration is a huge issue here in Utah,” says Fitzpatrick. “I guess you could say that we’ll advocate for the issue in terms of paying attention to it, but we won’t be taking any sides in terms of supporting specific legislation or anything of the like.”

The paper will also have national and international news from Spanish-language wire services. Ahora Utah will be available at supermarkets and other public gathering spots. The launch date has not been set, but it is expected to be in June.
