Beleaguered by a heavy debt load, the Journal Register–publisher of numerous Hispanic newspapers– is at risk of filing for bankruptcy. It has reportedly secured the services of the investment bank Lazard to act as adviser in plotting the way forward.

A variety of options are on the table, including filing for bankruptcy protection and significant restructuring. Some blame the collapse of the automobile industry and the ensuing dearth of related ad-dollars as responsible for the newspaper industry's economic woes.

The Journal Register Company currently publishes:

Las Noticias (Kingston, NY)

Registro (Troy/Albany NY; New Haven, CT; Hartford, CT; Waterbury/Danbury, CT)

La Voz (Norristown, PA; Reading, PA)

El Latino Expreso(Lorain, OH; Trenton, NJ)

No word yet from the company on how its financial situation will affect their Hispanic newspaper properties.
