In a major move for the global advertising industry, reported by ADWEEK, PepsiCo chose Publicis Groupe as its exclusive global media partner to operate under the consolidated model “One PepsiCo” unifying strategy, planning, procurement, and AI-powered technology across more than 200 markets. The Publicis PepsiCo agreement displaces Omnicom from the PepsiCo account after more than two decades of collaboration in key markets. The financial weight of this contract is enormous: according to its latest annual report, PepsiCo allocated US $5.4 billion to marketing activities, investing US $$3.4 billion exclusively in advertising.
This momentous
agreement between PepsiCo and Publicis not only redefines the media agency landscape but also reveals how global corporations are fundamentally restructuring what they buy, how they buy it, and what real value they demand from their partner agencies in a data-driven era.

Publicis – PepsiCo: The giant realignment; A consolidated model powered by AI

The multinational beverage and snack company granted to the French firm Publicis Groupe comprehensive management of their globalPublicis - PepsiCo media account without a pitch according to what was reported by ADWEEK. Under the structure known as “One PepsiCo”, the group will unify strategy, planning, media buying, activation, connected identity, and technology solutions into a single operating platform to serve more than 200 global markets and iconic brands such as Pepsi, Lay’s, and Gatorade.

‘One PepsiCo’ will unify strategy, planning, media buying, activation, connected identity, and technology solutions into a single operating platform to serve more than 200 global markets.

This consolidation displaced Omnicom Media Group, a holding company that has led PepsiCo’s media account in priority markets for over two decades. However, PepsiCo will continue to work with Omnicom for creative tasks, public relations and specific projects.

What drives Publicis’ PepsiCo win?

  • The corporate trigger:
    • Agreement between PepsiCo and Publicis: Global consolidation of media without prior competition under the model“One PepsiCo”.
  • Immediate side effects:
    • Conflict of interest: Publicis’ voluntary withdrawal from the Coca-Cola tender.
    • Power of large accounts: Prioritizing larger-scale global budgets over regional accounts.
  • Transformation of the advertising model:
    • Integration vs. Fragmentation: End of traditional silos to unify media, data and technology.
    • Efficiency and Procurement: Reduction of operating costs and optimization of advertising investment.
    • Artificial intelligence: Agents and primary data (first-party data) replacing manual media purchasing.
  • Future projection and regional impact:
    • The partner of the future: Evolution of traditional advertising agencies towards integrated technology and marketing platforms.

Implications for the future of Coca Cola’s media business

Publicis won the North American Coca Cola media account in March of last year. WPP remains Coca-Cola’s global marketing network partner through its bespoke unit WPP Open X. The partnership handles end-to-end global marketing operations, spanning creative duties, social media, commerce, influencer marketing, data technology, and production. With the PepsiCo media account now going to Publicis, and  Publicis’ decision to withdraw from the global tender on behalf of Coca-Cola to avoid a conflict of interest, WPP may be in a better position to add media to its Coca Cola duties.
