In a bid to find a niche—any niche—in which its beleaguered Zune portable media player might thrive, Microsoft has signed a deal with Univision Online to launch a new music download service, “Baja Zune Musica en Univision Online” (Download Zune Music on Univision Online). The new service will be hosted at Univision.com and powered by Zune.
The agreement designates Microsoft the exclusive integrated online music download and subscription provider on Univision.com in the United States, including Puerto Rico. The service offers Zune music charts, artist profiles and access to more than 4 million songs through the online music store called Zune Marketplace.
As part of the launch, Zune will be offering select Latin artists and albums on the Zune Marketplace at half price.
Microsoft is hoping that the new launch will give the traction in a growing marketplace that is passionate about music. So far, the Zune project has been a bumpy ride for the company, with the nationwide retailer GameStop dropping the product and sales remaining flat against the Ipod.
