La Opinión Investigative Special Report: A Country in Arms

Multimedia series looks at the rapidly growing firearms industry

La Opinión announced today the launch of a powerful new series about the rapid proliferation of guns in the United States. The series will include a multimedia website combined with a series of special reports to be published beginning on Monday, May 23rd.

The multimedia series produced by Claudia Núñez and Aurelia Ventura entitled, A Country in Arms, focuses on the proliferation of guns in the United States, where more than 200 million firearms are in the hands of citizens with no or little connection to law enforcement. Among the issues

the series will explore is the lack of a centralized system for tracking weapons used to commit a crime.

"This multimedia series is important for the whole community, not just Hispanics. Bullets do not discriminate", stated Pedro Rojas, Executive Editor for La Opinión. "The series depicts a broad portrait of a problem that is growing everyday and the significant impact it is having in this country and our neighbors."

In addition to looking at gun ownership across the country, the series will also focus on the legal arms market as a major source for drug smugglers working across the Southern border. As a result of easy access to legal firearms many drug smugglers are able to stay under the radar of

authorities and the result has been escalating violence between drug cartels operating on both sides of the border.

The investigative series will encompass a multimedia website www.laopinion.com/armas  alongside special reports that will be published in La Opinión, El Diario and all impreMedia publications beginning May 23, 2011. The multimedia site will feature individual stories, informative pieces on the firearm industry, videos, photo galleries, and interactive maps of the routes of arms and previous crimes of firearms across the U.S.
