Online video site Hulu has launched a Spanish-language programming service .A few weeks ago Univision announced that video streaming website Hulu will have a selection of the Spanish-language soap opera dramas known as telenovelas and other shows from Univision. According the Hulu announcement, the dedicated collection of Spanish-language content also include Galavision, Estrella TV, Azteca America, TeleFutura Butaca, Caracol Televisión, Comarex, Imagina US, Laguna Productions, Maya Entertainment, RCTV, Todobebe and Venevision.
Hundreds of hours of Spanish-language content are now available to subscribers of pay-monthly service Hulu Plus. Selected shows are also available on the free version of the site.
The Hulu Latino service is being sponsored by five Hulu advertisers: Corona, Modelo, Toyota, Pantene, and Volkswagen of America.
Hulu says it also plans to expand Hulu Latino, which appears as a separate tab on the Hulu homepage, in the coming months, with content from an additional 11 Spanish-language partners to begin appearing in 2012.
“Our goal was to delight the Hispanic community by creating a fully integrated experience within the Hulu environment,” said Hulu’s senior VP of content Andy Forssell.
He added that the Hulu Latino launch marked the “first time that such a robust, Spanish-language premium content collection has been available through an online video service in the US.”
Users searching the site will now be able to filter search results for Spanish-language content and search for programm categories such as ‘novelas’ and ‘comedias.’ Hulu’s recommendation engine will also suggest relevant Spanish-language content.
The Latino content expansion comes after Hulu launched a version of its service in Japan in August – its first and to-date only international roll-out.
