Green Christmas

Often maligned as a corporate giant that cares for nothing but its bottom line, mega-retailer Wal-Mart is looking to spread the word that its got more on its mind than profits.

Wal-Mart is distributing a Spanish-language press release noting that it has teamed up with the senior style editor for All You magazine to suggest environmentally friendly gifts this holiday season. The list includes bamboo products, organic products like fruit, coffee and clothing and energy-saving light bulbs.

The statement cites that over two thirds of respondents indicated that giving environmentally-friendly gifts is important to do; roughly the same amount of respondents indicated their belief that these products cost more. Wal-Mart is trying to convey that this is not necessarily the case.

While some might view the move as an about-face for the company, others see the move as a cynical attempt to capitalize on the heightened awareness of “green” issues this holiday season.
