Freddy Rolón appointed VP of ESPN Deportes; Competition with Univision heats up

Freddy Rolón has been promoted to VP of ESPN Deportes Programming and Business Initiatives.  In his new role, Rolón will lead the ESPN Deportes programming team while retaining responsibility for the ESPN Deportes Radio and the ESPN DeportesLA.com businesses.  He will be based at ESPN's worldwide headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, and report to Lino Garcia, General Manager of ESPN Deportes. "For the past seven years, Freddy has successfully overseen the growth and expansion of the ESPN Deportes Radio network, and the development of the local .com business," said Garcia. "We are excited to have him bring his valuable experience and leadership to our programming efforts."  

Rolón most-recently served as Senior Director II, ESPN Deportes Radio and Business Initiatives, where he was part of the launch team behind ESPN's local sites.  Rolón began his ESPN career as an intern for ESPN International in the summer of 2003. 

Increased Competition with Univision Deportes  

Rolón´s appointment comes at a time in which ESPN is facing increased competition as the premier sports cable network from Univision, which recently launched Univision Deportes. a Spanish-language sports cable network. In April, Eric W. Conrad , a former ESPN executive, became VP of programming at Univision Deportes.  Univision has also beefed up the ranks of its new sports network with former ESPN Deportes executives.
