How a Hispanic Publisher Follows into the Penny Saver’s Footsteps

EC Classifieds’ inaugural edition is hitting the streets today July 1, 2015 with 95,000 copies at distribution points in the areas of Bakersfield, Orange County and Inland Empire. The new publication was created after the Penny Saver closed its doors in late May, leaving more than 678 employees out of work and many companies with decreased options for reaching local customers. Portada talked to Martha de la Torre, CEO of El Clasificado, about the new publication and its growth prospects.

How A.H. Belo is Turning into a Community Focused Marketing Services Company

A.H. Belo Corporation, the company that publishes the The Dallas Morning News and Spanish-language weekly Al Dia has gone through quite a few changes. Last year it sold its Riverside, CA, newspaper The Press Enterprise including its Spanish-language weekly La Prensa,  to Freedom Communications. The proceeds of that sale have been invested mostly into acquiring Dallas/Ft. Worth and the larger Texas market oriented digital marketing and event companies.

ANALYSIS: Tribune Gets a Major Hispanic Footprint in SoCal after the Purchase of San Diego’s UT

The US $85 million Tribune is spending amount to a relatively high valuation for print properties, reflecting the value of the Southern California print and digital franchise. While smaller than the English-language publications of the Union Tribune, Tribune is also adding the Spanish-language weekly Enlace as well as s a weekly Spanish language lifestyle and entertainment magazine, Vida Latina San Diego. Tribune Publishing now owns a substantial portfolio of Southern Californian properties targeting the Hispanic Population.

Mike Cano appointed President of AP&P Solutions

AP&P Solutions, a provider of integrated Digital and Traditional Media Solutions, announced the appointment of Mike Cano as President. In his new role, Cano will lead the company including its Out-of-Home/In-Store Digital TV Network, Print, Online, Mobile and Events.

Gannett folds USA Weekend Magazine

Gannett is folding its USA Weekend edition. The December 28 edition will be its last. Larry Kramer, president and publisher of USA Today wrote in a memo to Gannett employees on Friday.

Aaron Kushner to evaluate whether the Los Angeles Register is viable as a daily

Aaron Kushner, CEO of Freedom Communications, said that he will evaluate “in the next few weeks” whether the Los Angeles Register can have a viable future as a daily. The Los Angeles Register was launched in April of this year in the Los Angeles, CA, market, where it competes with other dailies including the Los Angeles Times.
