According to Abadia, an important driver of success involves demonstrating how the organisation’s brands fulfil a core underlying mission.Cleanliness is a brand attribute that needs to be included in the Clorox messaging, according to Abadia.Marketing efforts that show “men and women together” taking joint responsibility for keeping – and thus enjoying – a clean house.A related case in point involves a campaign that ran in Argentina earlier this year that tackled this issue – and built on a tongue-in-cheek expression that whenever a man does domestic chores, he “deserves a monument”Building on this theme, Abadia suggested that programs of this type elevate Clorox’s brands from being just a product to having a clear purpose.

We interviewed Calil on the main features of an excellent marketer as well as on Electrolux Home Products Latin American marketing organization, strategy, media mix and more…

Wilson Calil, Regional Marketing Manager Latin America & Caribbean, Electrolux Home Products
Wilson Calil, Regional Marketing Manager Latin America & Caribbean, Electrolux Home Products

Portada: What are in your opinion the key features of a good marketer?

Wilson Calil, Regional Marketing Manager Latin America & Caribbean at Electrolux Home Products: “A good marketer has to be a good leader, a very up-to-date person and at the  forefront in terms of technology. To be a good leader in Latin America, the Marketing professionals need to balance between centralizing decisions and providing the right autonomy to local teams, specially dealing with local brands or very specific country matters. This balance requires also keeping the team motivated and finding synergies between countries. When dealing with new opportunities to connect with consumers, it is important to understand how technology is changing and moving. The market touch points have increased substantially in the digital environment and it will keep moving forward, becoming a challenge if the Marketer is not up to date with current events.”

How is Electrolux Home Products organized in terms of its Latin American Marketing Organization?
W.C.: “We have a regional team located in São Paulo and Miami and local teams in 9 countries. Besides Brazil, local teams form four clusters and connect with dotted lines to the regional corporate team. It is important to mention that this organizational structure follows the global Marketing Strategy to focus on consumer orientation.”

What are the special features of Electrolux Latin American Marketing in terms of the product characteristics and the markets it targets?
W.C.:
“Electrolux ensures a culture of always listening to consumers. To accomplish that, we run quantitative and qualitative consumer research  almost every day in Latin America. We think that design and consumer driven innovation can change the game at  the point of sale. That is the reason we have a 70% consumer preference target when testing our prototypes up against our main competitors. The result is that our products are the most modern and carry specific characteristics that integrate with one another, generating a perfect harmony in the kitchens.”

We have a culture of always listening to consumers. To accomplish that, we run quantitative and qualitative consumer research  almost every day in Latin America.
What is the “typical” media mix for Electrolux Latin American marketing depending on the country?W.C.: “The corporate strategy is to focus on three main marketing pillars: Point of sale activities, Digital Marketing and Public Relations in order to reach all consumers touch points in the three phases of pre purchase, at purchase and post purchase. Depending on the country’s needs, they tend to adapt their mix between these three. On average, around 10% of all our investments in Latin America have been done through digital Marketing activities.”

How has the 2014 purchase of the General Electric appliance unit impacted your company particularly as it relates to Latin American marketing?
W.C.: “Electrolux has stated that in September 2014 the Group signed an agreement to acquire the appliance business owned by General Electric – GE Appliances – a leading manufacturer of products for the kitchen and laundry in the United States. The regulatory process is underway and we expect to receive approval this year. Until that time, Electrolux and GE Appliances remain independent companies.”

We focus on three main marketing pillars: Point of sale activities, Digital Marketing and Public Relations

Would you categorize Electrolux as a relatively new company when it comes to digital marketing yes/no and why?
W.C.:
“Not globally, Electrolux is very active in the digital environment, investing in training and relevant content for consumers. Currently we have social platforms available in all Latin America; we produce local content, respecting each country’s culture and their specific demands. Our marketing teams have been innovatively producing great interactive campaign. Nevertheless, we recognize that there are still opportunities to improve in a few countries. The most active Marketing team is the Brazilian team, connecting PR activities and digital marketing perfectly as well as producing amazing contents mainly for Instagram, You Tube and Facebook.”

Spanish-language spots show advertisers’ increasing determination to reach Hispanics, while Skyword provides tips on doing it right.

Enterprise tests Spanish spots

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtrG-EWfsSk&w=560&h=315]Car rental agency Enterprise released a Spanish-language commercial in six U.S. markets, highlighting its service that picks up customers and drives them to rental locations. The 30-second spot by Bromley, “Vamos Por Ti,” began airing on Telemundo and Univisión in Texas and New Mexico, backed by radio and digital advertising. Lee Broughton, assistant vice president of Enterprise Brand Marketing, North America, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “We’re going after what we believe is a burgeoning demographic for the company,” Broughton said. “We really feel like we have an opportunity to build that demographic.”

Read our interview with Broughton here.

After stumbles, Target to double down on Hispanics

target campaignDuring the recession, Target changed its brand strategy from an emphasis on affordable style to rock-bottom prices. It didn’t work so well. Now, the brand is hoping Hispanics, long a big part of its consumer base, will help it with its own economic recovery. Its new CEO, Brian Cornell, told investors, “Our guest is going to be increasingly a Hispanic shopper.” While just 38 percent of Target shoppers overall identify the store as their favorite, some 54 percent of Hispanic millennials said it was their favorite.

Target’s new campaign, Sin Traducción, was created by LatinWorks, and has a strong social media component. Fans are encouraged to add their own ideas for untranslatable words via Twitter.

Hispanic mobile use not only big but still growing

It’s not late-breaking news to any marketer that Hispanics over-index for mobile and social media. This segment is also growing faster than other demographics, according to Celine Matthiessen of BIA/Kelsey, speaking at the Radio Ink Hispanic Media Conference.

PM Publicidad goes all in on total market

PM3 LogoPM Publicidad, the Atlanta-based, full-service ad agency, relaunched as PM3. The agency wanted to highlight its expertise beyond “just Hispanic,” it said. We’re not sure what they mean by that. But capabilities, backed by new staffing, now include media planning and buying, digital asset management and production services, social media management, experiential marketing, mobile app design and development. For example, PM3 recently created a content integration project with ESPN, beIN Sports, and Fox Deportes on behalf of its client NAPA.

Multicultural or truly localized?

In the marketing world, “multicultural” is often used as a synonym for Hispanic. Biiiig mistake, says George Levy of Skyword. He points out that localization of content needs to take into account the multiple cultures within the U.S. and Latin America. Even the language itself has nuances, Levy points out; for example, the folks in Portugal speak Portuguese differently from those who speak it in Spain. And don’t confuse a quesadilla with an arepa, for Pablo’s sake.

MaxPoint goes public

Adtech company MaxPoint Interactive began trading its stock on the New York Stock Exchange. Its software creates 44,000 “micro zones” called Digital Zips to create what it says is hyper-local advertising. MaxPoint aims to drive in-store sales for advertisers by helping them reach the right neighborhoods online for their local, regional, and national campaigns. Customers include Starbucks, Electrolux and pasta company Barilla.
