UVideos launch: Content available to subscribers within 24 hours of TV airing

Univision Communications is officially announcing the launch of UVideos today. UVideos is a bilingual digital network with about 1500 hours of long form programming and about 200 short clips a day free to users.

What is interesting about the announcement is that Univision will solve the Prime Time TV cannibalization issue as well as the online video rights issues in the following way. According to the FAQ section of the UVideos.com site, “Most UVideos content will be available to viewers within 24 hours after they air on television.” In addition,  through an arrangement with participating TV providers, UVideos is making full episodes of some of the favorite Univision shows available in high-quality video the day after they air on television. UVideos tells its audience that “Only if you log in with a participating TV Provider account can you view the most recent full episodes.”
The FAQ section of the UVideos site adds that “This service is free as part of your TV subscription account." Univision defines “TV provider" as a cable, satellite or telco (telephone company) that provides TV programming to homes as a paid service. Dish Network is signed on at launch, with Cablevision Systems, AT&T, Verizon and Xbox on board, Univision told Broadcasting & Cable.

Online and via Apps…
Available via UVideos.com and the UVideos mobile app on iOS and Android compatible devices, U.S. Hispanics will have access to their favorite Univision content, including popular Televisa programming - in Spanish or subtitled in English - when and where they want it and across any device. The announcement was made by Kevin Conroy, president of Univision Interactive and Enterprise Development. "UVideos offers a compelling new way for U.S. Hispanics to connect with Univision Networks and watch their favorite shows anytime, anywhere, while also creating new opportunities for advertisers and distributors," said Conroy. In addition, Conroy announced that "Te Presento a Valentin" (I Present You, Valentine), the first webnovela co-produced by Univision and Televisa, will premiere today, Monday Oct. 22,  on the new digital network.

…Social Elements
UVideos.com and the UVideos mobile app have many unique elements including a time-syncing feature powered by Arktan, a provider of social curation and real-time conversation products. When viewers watch videos of shows after live programming, they are able to see all the social and on-site comments played back to them as they occurred during original broadcast. This means that friends can experience shows together, even if they're not watching at the same time.
