NYT-About.com Sale: What is the future of About.com/espanol?
The New York Times acknowledged that it is in discussions with interested parties to sell About.com, the question-and-answer site it acquired in 2005 for US $410 million. All Things Digital broke the news that competitor Answers.com is interested in buying About.com for US $270 million.
About.com also has a Spanish-language property at About.com/espanol, which was introduced in April 2011. The site has more than 100 channels aimed at U.S. Hispanics. Even though the site has visitors from Latin America, its only focus for now lies in targeting the U.S. Hispanic population.
Besides English, Answers.com is published in German, Italian, French, Tagalog (Philippines) and in Spanish (http://es.answers.com/). It will be interesting to see if and how About.com/Espanol and (http://es.answers.com/) work together to consolidate and/or develop new properties..
About mostly works with Guides (in Spanish Guias or Topics) which are written on topics that About’s editorial team deems as most interesting to Hispanics. There are not many Guide or Topic sites (e.g. About.com, Ask.com) in the Latin Digital Media world, another example is Spain’s Grupo Prisa’s ParaSaber.com. About.com/espanol topics include main themes such as Coches (Cars), Casa (Home), Cocina y recetas (kitchen and recipes), Educacion (Education), Deportes (Sports), Viajes (Travel) etc… These main themes are then split into subthemes (e.g. Viajes en Nueva York, “Travel in New York”).
