In a move to sanction copyright infringement, Google will be updating its algorithms next week. The modification wll be taking into account the number of valid copyright removal notices Google receives for any given site. According to Amit Singhal, SVP of Engineering, “sites with high numbers of removal notices may appear lower in results”. The update is supposed to help users find legitimate, quality sources of content more easily.

Amit has also said that since Google reinitiated their copyright removal policy over two years ago, they’ve been given much more data about infringing content online: “We are now receiving and processing more copyright removal notices every day than we did in all of 2009 – more than 4.3 million url’s in the last 30 days alone”.

Google will continue to provide counter-notice tools so that those who believe their content was wrongly removed can get it reinstated.
