On July 24, Apple celebrated the closing of its third fiscal quarter ended June 30th with 17 million iPads sold, $35 billion in revenues, a net income of $8.8 billion, and 62% of sales – 10.5 million units– made outside of the United States.

It is a known fact that Apple has sold more than 84 million iPads since the product debuted in 2010, but clearly not all of them are still active, nor are sales divided proportionally among all countries across the globe.  Just how many iPads are there in Latin America?

The iPad market in LatAm

For both publishers seeking to migrate their media to Apple tablets, as well as app developers seeking to enter pan-regional markets, knowing the real number of iPad users in each country is an important issue.  To answer this question, Portada did the following research using Facebook segmentation tools.

Facebook segmentation tools allow us to know how many users of said social network use Facebook’s IOS app.  Clearly, this does not give us an exact number of Apple tablet users, since not everyone who owns an iPad uses Facebook.  However, this being the social network with the largest reach (with more than 60% of all Internet users and over 90% of all social network users), these figures can give us a good idea of ??the number of iPads in circulation.

iPads in LatAm, by country

Colombia

Uruguay

Bolivia

Paraguay

As shown in the figures, Brazil and Mexico are undoubtedly the countries with the most iPads of the continent (five times more than the next closest).  In fact, the top two countries account for more than two thirds of the continent’s iPad population, which is almost 3 million.

How do these 3 million Latin American iPad users compare with U.S. numbers? In the United States, there are 12,139,560 iPad users as per Facebook data, which is four times higher than in LatAm.  Still, the Latin America numbers are nothing to laugh at, especially considering that the iPad demographic is more affluent than the majority of the population.  As for iPad numbers among the U.S. Hispanic population, Facebook doesn’t separate information on Hispanic and Non-Hispanic users using iPads on the US (and in any case, the segmentation of U.S. Hispanics made by Facebook is incomplete).

Finally, we can see that the Facebook figures show an important increase among iPad users in LatAm, which is consistent with strong sales in Apple’s fourth fiscal quarter.  Five months ago, Facebook registered only 1,422,020 iPad users in Latin America (a 206% increase).
