Global: Sony Acquires Gaikai

Sony Computer Entertainment has acquired the streaming video-game service Gaikai. The deal officially closed on June 30 in 380 million dollars.

“Sony has built an incredible brand with PlayStation and has earned the respect of countless millions of gamers worldwide," said Gaikai chief executive David Perry. “We're honoured to be able to help Sony rapidly harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide.”

According to SCE it will establish a new cloud service via the acquisition and aim to offer “unparalleled cloud entertainment experiences” by combining Gaikai's technical strength and engineering talent with SCE’s gaming platform knowledge and experience.

Gaikai was established in 2008 and is headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California. Its cloud-streaming platform enables the streaming of games to a wide variety of devices via the internet.
