»Boston Investor Group buys Orange County Register

Orange County Register, and its Spanish-language sister paper Excelsior, has been purchased by 2100 Trust LLC, a privately-held company led by a Massachusetts investor who previously planned to buy The Boston Globe, from Freedom Communications. There was speculation that the San Diego Union Tribune, who publishes Spanish-language publications including the weekly Enlace, would acquire the Orange County Register. The breakup of Freedom began last November when Freedom announced the sale of its eight television stations to Sinclair Broadcast Group for $385 million. That sale was followed by the announcement in May and early June of three separate deals for Freedom's Midwest, Texas and Florida/North Carolina newspapers. Earlier in the year, Freedom sold two smaller papers – The Tribune in Seymour, Ind. and the News Journal in Clovis, N.M. Terms of the newspaper deals were not disclosed. In addition to the flagship OC Register, 2100 Trust will also pick up the Irvine Appeal-Democrat, Barstow Desert Dispatch, The Porterville Record and the Victorville Daily Press — all in California — as well as The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and The Sun in Yuma, Arizona. The group will also take ownership of a number of specialty publications and associated digital properties.
