The news this week that Mitt Romney’s father was born in Northern Mexico, prompted Latino bloggers and journalists to flood the social media networks with hundreds of tweets, re-tweets, opinion pieces and even mock Twitter accounts, touting the republican’s Mexican origins.

Among the most creative inventions came @MexicanMitt, a Twitter account featuring a sombrero-wearing Mitt Romney who describes himself as: “I am the Most Mexican Man in the World! Follow me as I run for Presidente of the United Estates… Ajúa!”

The mind behind @MexicanMitt is Mexican-American famed cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz, creator of La Cucaracha, the first nationally syndicated, politically themed Latino daily comic strip. In only a few hours after posting a first tweet, @MexicanMitt had attracted the interest of Latino journalists with witty, irreverent updates including a proposal to name Cheech Marín as Secretary of Agriculture “¡Síganme los güeros” or requests to potential followers to “Follow me as the ICE follows my familia.”

Romney, who appeared to be leading the GOP in the Florida primary, has taken a strong stance against undocumented immigration. Still, on Wednesday Romney’s campaign released “Nosotros,” a Spanish-language advertisement featuring three Cuban-American political leaders (Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz Balart and former Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart). The ad also features Romney’s son, Craig, who is fluent in Spanish and provides the main voiceover.

The ad, which is currently airing on Florida’s 10 TV markets, makes Romney the first Republican presidential candidate to begin advertising in Spanish. It is estimated that 72 percent of all registered Republicans in Florida are of Hispanic origin.
