Puerto Rican Calle 13 received a record 10 nominations from the Latin Recording Academy, including best album of the year “Entren Los Que Quieran” and best song of the year “Latinoamérica”. René Diaz, Singer of Calle 13, said to El Nuevo Dia that he only expects to win with “Latinoamérica”: “I feel it´s the best song I have written. I feel this song strengthens Latin America”, he said. The 12th Latin Grammys Awards next November 10 will be supported on radio, TV and internet via Univision.

This year, groups claiming to be affiliates of Anonymous — perhaps the largest and most well-known hacker group — have sprung up in Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Venezuela, the Miami Herald reports. Brazilian government websites have been attacked more than 1,250 times this year and Chile has seen waves of cyber attacks as part of Anonymous’ “BadEducation” campaign in support of student protestors. The public media have undergone a major expansion in the region for the past years. In Ecuador the media space changed because of the new Constitution in 2008. Brazil and Argentina have new Broadcasting Laws and Peru is trying to reverse the dismantling that has suffered the media under Alan Garcia’s government. According to IPS, also national radios and news agencies are expanding.

Former Brazilian President Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva began chemotherapy treatment last week to eradicate a cancerous tumor in his throat. Brazilians ´messages for Lula spread in social networks; the Brazilian soccer team Corinthias started the last game with a huge flag that said “Força Lula” and the spot rapidly turned into a hash tag in twitter.
