Two years after launching its BBC Entertainment and CBeebies channels in Latin America, BBC Worldwide Channels has announced that the channels have gained a solid foothold in the Pay-TV industry as a result of strong growth in the region. BBC Entertainment and CBeebies are broadcast in 15 countries in Latin America and the company continues to work on expanding the distribution of both channels to other Spanish-speaking countries, while continuing to provide a greater variety of new programming content.

"The channels have experienced rapid growth in the region," says Jessica Rodriguez, Senior VP and General Manager, BBC Worldwide Latin America and U.S. Hispanic Market. "Now, we are aware that this is only the beginning.  Our short term goal is to grow our subscriber base for both channels throughout the region, as well as provide a diverse catalog of high quality programming to a very demanding audience, which is something the BBC is globally known for."

In line with these plans, both channels are bringing to market new seasons of existing series, along with exclusive premieres of new series such as The Locator, Luther, Graham Norton and Wallander for BBC Entertainment, and Everything’s Rosie and Garth and Bev for CBeebies.

BBC Entertainment’s increased audience during its first two years in the region has been led by such recognized shows as Dancing with the Stars, Top Gear, Being Erica and Torchwood, in addition to innovative programs like Dragon's Den, How to Look Good Naked and The F Word, among others.

In order to further strengthen its programming, BBC Entertainment recently acquired new series, including hit shows such as The Locator and Luther.

"We’ve generated a loyal following in mature markets, which shows that viewers spend more time watching BBC Entertainment than other already established channels in the market," says Dan Salerno, Vice President of Programming for Latin America and the U. S. Hispanic Market.  "Offering access to the new seasons of BBC’s global brands, as well as providing exclusive premieres of internationally renowned series will allow us to continue to ensure programming that is always original, innovative and attractive to BBC Entertainment viewers."

CBeebies, BBC's preschool channel, has a wide selection of programming including outstanding animated programs such as In the Night Garden, Charlie and Lola, and Nina and the Neurons. The channel has also just added the high-definition series Everything’s Rosie.

"CBeebies has also represented an attractive [TV] alternative for parents: viewership  in Mexico grew an impressive 29% in the first half of 2010, compared to a year ago," Salerno adds, citing data from IBOPE Media, Mexico (Mexico DF), Pay-TV Households, 1st Half 2009, 1st Semester 2010 – Monday-Sunday, Total Day 6AM-6AM and Prime Time 7PM-12AM.  "This growth is due, among other factors, to the channel being backed by BBC’s heritage and reputation, as well as its quality programming— two qualities that provide consumer confidence."
