Cinco De Mayo Surprise: Newsday Media Group Introduces “Am Nueva York”

Some good news for New York’s Hispanic newspaper landscape. Am New York, the free daily sheet owned by Newsday Media Group (owned by Cablevision) will be publishing 6 special issues in 2010 targeting the Big Apple’s Hispanic community. The first one is debuting today for the Cinco de Mayo holiday.

Rolando Pujol, Managing Editor of Am New York tells Portada that Am Nueva York, will be integrated into the paper. However, the listings portion will be a four-page pullout. It will have a page count of 10. Regarding whether it will be written in English or Spanish, Pujol notes that it will be written in English, however “we will have several listings that will be in Spanish..” Since Am Nueva York is inserted into every day newspaper copies of Am New York, it’s circulation is the same as Am New York (338,000 copies).

According to an ad published in yesterday’s edition of Am New York, the series promises “to be a dynamic six-month series highlighting the Latin influence on NYC. Featuring a snapshot of vibrant Hispanic neighborhoods, restaurant, club and cultural event listings.” It is presented by the following five sponsors: Metro PCC, MCDonald’s , Health Plus, Success Charner Network and El Museo del Barrio.

Tribune, the former publisher of Newsday (which was acquired by Newsday Media Group (Cablevision),  used to publish Hoy New York but stopped its publication two years ago due to lackluster financial performance. It first sold it to Impremedia, which then closed it in January 2009. New York Tempo, an English publication targeting New York City’s English-dominant Latinos also closed last year. The New York Daily News still publishes a monthly insert called Viva New York.
