El Mundo Officially Launches its Americas Digital Edition

Commitment of contributing to the consolidation of democracies in Latin America. Pedro J. Ramirez, editor of El Mundo, states his ambition to be the main news site in the Spanish-speaking world.(Lea aquí la versión en español)

The digital edition of the Spanish newspaper El Mundo for the Americas was officially launched yesterday during an event at the Metropolitan Club in New York City. (Portada broke the story the past 28th of November.)

The event, called “Spain in the world: The great American Business Opportunities” brought together leading Spanish entrepenerus and government members including Emilio Botin, president ot Grupo Santander, Florentino Perez, president of ACS, Antonio Brufau, president of Repsol – YPF and Miguel Sebastion, Spain’s minister of Industry.

Pedro J. Ramirez, general director of Unidad Editorial and editor of El Mundo, said that El Mundo America’s will contribute to consolidate the democratic system in Latin America. He added that in parts of Latin America freedom of speech continues to be violated, the most representative cases being Cuba and Venezuela.

He also noted that his ambition is to convert the digital edition of El Mundo into the equivalent of what “The Herald Tribune” or the “Wall Street Journal” are in the English-speaking world.

Fernando Baeta, editor of El Mundo.es, showed the main sections of the new of El Mundo’s Americas website. He talked about the increasing significance of the Spanish-language in the U.S. and concluded that  “Information at the service of people and power at the service of reason” will be the leitmotiv of the new website.

Before the El Mundo America´s edition was launched, which is headquartered in Miami, the audience of El Mundo.es in the Americas amounted to 4.59 million unique users. The only newspaper whose digital edition has a larger audience is Argentina’s Clarin with almost 6 million of unique users.

Starmedia, which recently launched Orange Advertising Network, is the exclusive advertising sales representative of El Mundo’s website in the Americas.
