YouTube to Carry Univision Programming

YouTube, the video-sharing site owned by Google Inc., will start carrying Univision Communications Inc. programming to lure Spanish-speaking users.

Kevin Conroy, Univision’s president of interactive media, said the content will include back-catalog and more recent TV shows, movies and original web series.

The deal will start in the first quarter of 2010 and will include clips of shows like “Cristina”, “El Gordo y la Flaca” and “Escandalo TV” belonging to Univision or its subsidiaries Telefutura and Galavision. The deal is non-exlusive for either party.Univision can syndicate its video content to other networks, and YouTube cancontinue to add new Spanish-language partners. Currently, the company pulls in content from Azteca America and Batanga in the U.S., and RTVE in Europe.

The companies will share revenue from advertising on and around the programs, with Univision getting the majority of the sales, said Chris Maxcy, head of content partnerships at YouTube. The content, including TV programs and celebrity interviews, will come from three Univision networks and includes past and newer videos.

Maxcy said Hispanic users accounted for around 6.4 million of YouTube’s unique visitors per month, and that this deal was part of an ongoing effort to better serve them.
