BBC Magazines to Launch Lonely Planet Magazine

BBC Magazines is going to launch Lonely Planet magazine later this year. BBC Magazines will publish the title in the UK under the license from Lonely Planet, in which BBC Worldwide has a majority stake it bought in November 2007. BBC Magazines also plans to publish the title in other key territories in the future.

It is not clear whether those territories will include the U.S. Hispanic market or Latin America 

Edition in Spain

In Spain, Lonely Planet, the Australian based publisher that is now majority owned by the BBC, publishes a monthly magazine since September 2007.  The magazine is produced by Spanish publishing partner geoPlaneta, in association with Sapiens Publications. 

Geoplaneta translates and adapts Lonely Planet guide books into Spanish for the Spanish and Latin American markets.  The full-color glossy magazine has a print run of 60,000 copies and retails at €5.95 through subscriptions, kiosks and standard distribution channels. Editorial are articles commissioned and edited by Sapiens.

Every 170 page issue includes in depth features on travel and life in a selected country or city, illustrated with photographs. The magazine also provides practical advice on travel. "We decided to launch the magazine in Spain as it's a very active magazine market, with huge distribution channels through kiosk selling. News and magazine kiosks are an important part of the Spanish market and the magazine is a great way of introducing Lonely Planet to a wider audience." Lonely Planet's Foreign Rights Director, Clare Mercer, said at the launch last year.

Clare added that, "We've also seen tremendous growth in travel in this region and we are fortunate that in Sapiens, geoPlaneta has found a very experienced publisher with an instinctive understanding of Lonely Planet's ethos.”

Time Out Controversy

Tony Elliott founded London listings magazine Time Out four decades ago to develop a global empire with 23 magazines in 16 countries and more than 40 regularly updated city guides, some of them in Latin America. Elliott now finds himself at war with BBC Worldwide, which he believes has stepped well beyond its boundaries with the £75m acquisition of the rival travel guide publisher Lonely Planet from Australia, last year.

In November last year, BBC Worldwide bought a 75% stake in Lonely Planet, one of the world's most successful travel information providers. Lonely Planet has over 360 writers and photographers and produces around 500 travel books on destinations around the world, downloadable digital guides, an award-winning website, wireless applications and television programs.
