Shazaaam!!! Marvel Comics Goes Hispanic

Publishes bilingual Fantastic Four edition.

Content

Marvel Entertainment has taken its biggest step to date toward targeting Hispanic readers with its recently-published Spanish-language edition of the iconic Fantastic Four series.

The edition was released in late December under the title Fantastic Four: Isla de la Muerte!, and chronicles the superheroes’ adventures in Puerto Rico battling the fabled beast, the Chupacabra—a sort of Latin American version of the werewolf or boogie-man.

Marvel’s Editor-in-chief Joe Quesada said, given that Hispanics currently make up a rapidly growing segment of the publisher’s readership, it was a good time to develop a title that would resonate culturally and reach them in their own language.

In 2004, Marvel developed the character Anya Corazón to appeal to Latino readers, but the project was shelved after just a few issues.
