The Al Dia Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by the Philadelphia newspaper Al Dia, has announced the establishment of the “Felix Varela Annual Awards for Excellence in Spanish-language Journalism,” which will recognize excellence journalism in two categories: Spanish-language print journalism, and Spanish-language digital journalism.

The prizes are awarded in the name of Felix Varela, an American intellectual of Hispanic origin who published one of the nation’s first Spanish-language newspaper in Philadelphia 183 years ago.

Each prize carries with it the cash award of $10,000, the largest award of its kind in Hispanic journalism, according to the foundation.

While the deadline for submissions is June of 2008, the ceremony itself will be held during Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from mid-September to mid-October 2008.
