Ford Sponsors Bilingual Newspaper in Education Program

The Ford Motor Company Fund is sponsoring a bilingual Newspaper In Education program which coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15). The fourth- through eighth-grade program supplies classes with free, bilingual materials for using newspapers to learn about both Hispanic American history and current affairs. The program also partners English-language dailies with Spanish-language or bilingual papers in each market. This year, 19 dailies are participating, including three papers new to the campaign: The Los Angeles Times, the Orlando Sentinel, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Eighteen Hispanic-oriented papers are also participating. Campbell & Co, the ad agency administering the program, is looking for another Spanish- or bilingual paper to partner with the 19th English-language daily. Last year, close to a million children received materials. Campbell & Co. estimates that this year the program will distribute 1,298,278 sets of materials.

Ford Motor Company Fund supports four Newspapers in Education programs throughout the year: Ford Freedom Awards (Black History); Occupations of the Land/Land that Connects (Environment/Earth Week); Hispanic Heritage; and Land, Lives and Legends (Native American). These special editions are distributed in markets around the nation.

Newspapers in Education is a national program sponsored by local newspapers in cities around the country. NIE programs provide classroom editions of local newspapers to students in grades 4-8 that allow teachers to integrate relevant world and local news, issues, trends and politics into classroom lessons.
