Tu Ciudad to Expand into New York market

Emmis Communications’ Tu Ciudad magazine will expand into the New York market…

Content

Emmis Communications plans to publish a New York version of Tu Ciudad magazine in 2006. The publicly traded company has communicated its plans to its shareholders. Emmis Communications intends to publish magazines in different cities with a regional approach. Emmis owns radio stations in the New York market.

Gabriel Grimalt, associate publisher of Tu Ciudad Los Angeles, recently told Portada® that “the Hispanic market is too segmented and diverse to target with a national magazine. We plan to expand into New York, Chicago, Miami, and Texas.” For the next eighteen months, however, the publishers say their efforts will be focused exclusively on Tu Ciudad Los Angeles. Emmis Publications publishes magazines in other areas heavily populated by Hispanics like Texas, where it publishes Texas Monthly, (circulation 300,000).

City and regional magazines
Emmis Communications currently publishes Tu Ciudad magazine in Los Angeles. Tu Ciudad Los Angeles, is a bi-monthly English-language publication targeted at the growing community of affluent Latinos in the area, which measures approximately three-and-a-half million. Apart from serving as a city guide to nightlife and entertainment, Tu Ciudad also covers more serious issues facing the Latino community. The wide ranging coverage will be met with equally diverse advertising, including retail, automotive, and technological industries, appearing in both English and Spanish. Launching with a rate base of 110,000, a full page ad will cost about $12,800 (CPM US$ 116.36).

EMMIS entered the world of publishing in 1988, with the purchase of hometown Indianapolis Monthly, and over the following 12 years, the company grew to become one of the leading publisher of city and regional magazines. Building on the expertise of the management team at Indianapolis Monthly, EMMIS acquired Atlanta, Texas Monthly and Cincinnati, and in early 2000 entered into an agreement to purchase Los Angeles magazine. For the three months ended in May 31, 2005 Emmis Communications reported revenues of US $161.7 million (Radio: US $75,1 million, Television: US $66.6 million, Publishing US $20.1 million).
