According to figures from TNS/Media Intelligence, advertising revenues for the top 30 Spanish-language newspapers grew by US $44.1 million during the first two months of 2005, an increase of 8% compared to the same period last year. These figures reveal major differences in growth rates among the newspapers tracked by TNS. El Nuevo Herald, the leading Spanish-language newspaper in terms of ad revenues, saw its sales increase by 28%. Hoy newspapers saw substantial decreases in ad revenues in both New York (-52%) and Chicago (-57%). This was probably related to the discovery of circulation irregularities at Hoy last year. El Diario de Ciudad Juarez, published in the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez, saw an increase of 47%. Dallas-Ft. Worth dailies Al Día and Diario La Estrella, both launched in the fall of 2003, also saw ad revenues grow substantially. The Mexican newspaper El Norte, published out of Monterrey (Mexico), was also included in the TNS/Media Intelligence ranking. While the papers' combined growth in ad revenues is very good news, overall January and February were weak and volatile months for advertising. The trends reflected in these statistics will have to be confirmed later this year.
