The New York Times announced that it has launched its weekly news section with El Tiempo of Colombia. The first edition was published on Oct. 3. El Tiempo joins a growing number of newspapers that publish the supplement, which is designed to complement and enhance news coverage for the local audience.

The supplement, known as The New York Times International Weekly, retains the layout and typography of The New York Times. It includes news coverage, commentary, color photos and graphics about the United States, world affairs, business, culture and social trends. The supplement is prepared in New York by a team of editors and designers from The New York Times News Service in consultation with editors from the partner newspapers.

"All of us involved in The New York Times International Weekly section are pleased with our new relationship with El Tiempo, a well respected newspaper in Latin America," said Cristian Edwards, president, The New York Times News Service and Syndicate. "Our hope for this special section has always been to provide a thorough digest of accurate and timely news and news features to international readers who are interested in quality journalism."

"For us, this alliance represents the union of two publishing leaders — The New York Times, the world's most prestigious newspaper, and El Tiempo, the most important newspaper of Colombia," said Jaime Gaez, vice president of new business for Casa Editorial El Tiempo Ltda. "The inclusion of the section in our Sunday edition enables us to offer our readers an angle on world news unlike any other, written by The Times's respected journalists stationed around the world. The section will also help us sustain our leading position in Colombia's mass media."
