Launches: La Palma for Palm Beach...

Content

Palm Beach Newspapers (owned by privately held Cox Newspapers) launched La Palma, a new Spanish language daily with a circulation of 25,000, at the beginning of February. La Palma will be distributed on racks and at stores throughout Palm Beach County. The management of Palm Beach Newspapers, which also publishes The Palm Beach Post, The Palm Beach Daily News and Florida Pennysaver, is considering home-delivery distribution in the second semester of this year. La Palma replaces the weekly shopper El Pennysaver, and will take over its advertising. Additionally, The Palm Beach Post recently started a Spanish-language Internet job-site created by PowerOne Media. Atlanta based Cox Newspapers is the publisher of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and other newspapers in Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. According to sources interviewed by Portadatm, Cox is planning a new initiative to reach Hispanic readers later this year.

…A battle for the Hamptons…

Southampton Press will launch Nuestra Prensa, a new bilingual/bicultural, Spanish-language weekly, at the end of March in Eastern Long Island (NY). Nuestra Prensa will start as a freebie, but Southhampton Press expects to build up to a paid circulation of around 10,000. The Southampton Press also publishes Manorville & Moriches. Nuestra Prensa is the second Spanish-language weekly to announce a spring launch in what is likely to become a battle for the Hamptons. East End newspaper publisher, ad-man and restaurateur Jerry Della Femina also announced plans to launch a free Spanish weekly called El Independiente this April. He plans to distribute 20,000 free copies. Della Femina, also owns the Southampton Independent, the East Hampton Independent and the Riverhead Independent. He has yet to name an editor for El Independiente. Hispanics make up 23% of Long Island's population and publishers don't want to miss out on Eastern Long Island's burgeoning Latino Market.

…and a new paper in Central New York.

CNY Latina, a free bilingual monthly launched in February, will be distributed primarily in Syracuse in Central New York. The 20-page tabloid-format paper is printed by Mid-York Weekly & Pennysaver, part of the Tenney Media Group in Clinton (NY) and has a circulation of 5,000. CNY Latina will feature sections on a variety of topics including Latino news, sports and hobbies, arts and education, business and economy, and jokes and cartoons. According to Hugo Acosta, the president and publisher of CNY Latina, companies including McDonald's, Time Warner, Carrier Corporation, BlueCross/BlueShield, and the Pyramid Companies have expressed interest in the publication. Acosta hopes to expand CNY Latina's distribution to Watertown, Cortland, Auburn, and Utica/Rome by the end of the year.
