Out shopping again

Spanish publishing house Recoletos Grupo de Comunicación, 79% owned by British media conglomerate Pearson, recently bought a 10% stake in the weekly paper La Estrella de Papel. La Estrella, launched at the beginning of June, and led by Pablo Sebastián, is only the latest attempt to publish a quality weekly in Spain. In the late eighties, the weekly El Independiente made a brief appearance on Spanish newsstands, but was ultimately unable to survive. La Estrella is published in broadsheet format, an unusual format in Spain, where most newspapers are published in tabloid format. Pablo Sebastían is the founder and director of La Estrella Digital (www.estrelladigital.es), one of the first Internet only Spanish news sites. Launched in 1998, La Estrella Digital is also one of the first Spanish websites to extend its brand to print.
