Gannett Co. Inc. and MediaNews Group have announced the formation of the Texas-New Mexico Newspapers Partnership, the second partnership for the two companies. Gannett will contribute its El Paso Times and MediaNews will contribute its New Mexico newspapers, including five daily newspapers and two weeklies. Gannett will have approximately 66% interest in the partnership. MediaNews Group will have 34%. Gannett is the largest US newspaper publisher with a daily US circulation of 7.6 million. Media News Group is the seventh largest US publisher.

The two national newspaper chains will work together in an area of the country that has one of the largest Hispanic populations. 1.35 million Latinos live in Texas, or 28.9% of the population. By 2020, Hispanics will dominate the population of Houston.

Advertisers have taken a huge interest in Texas and New Mexico. During its Texas expansion, retailer Kohl's advertised in Spanish-language media. The states of Texas and New Mexico have also become more interesting to Mexican publishers (see “Mexican publishers expand into the Southwestern United States,” page 1, Portadatm No. 2 March/April 2003).
