Powerful friends

Speculation about the launch of a daily newspaper by media entrepreneur Carlos Spadone proved unfounded. Spadone told Portadatm that he does not intend to do so. Spadone is a close friend of Carlos Menem, a former Argentinean president and a candidate in the upcoming presidential elections. Two years ago Spadone partnered with multimedia group Clarin to purchase the Buenos Aires free daily, La Razón. Spadone holds a 25% stake. As a result of the arrangement with Clarin, Spadone cannot participate in other media ventures. Most print media companies in Argentina are in a stand by-mode, while they await the outcome of the April 27th presidential elections.
