New Hispanic Daily in New York

April 9, 2009
New York will soon have a new daily Spanish-language newspaper. On April 20, NY Al Día will be launched in tabloid format and with a page count of 28 pages.
Ny Al Día will have a circulation of 20,000 and a newsstand cost of $0.4 (forty cents). It will be sold at 1,800 points of sale in New York City, Long Island and New Jersey. The newspaper is headquartered in Long Island and soon will move its offices to 34th Street and Eight Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. The publication is going to be printed by Stellar Printing in Long Island City.

Former Hoy New York employees
The initial staff will have 13 employees, including General Manager Juan Carlos Sánchez, Editor Vicglamar Torres, Senior Account Executive Francisca Rivas and Production Manager Ivette Chestaro. All staff members until recently worked in Hoy New York until the publication was closed  by its publisher Impremedia in December.
The ownership of Ny Al Día is shared between all employees. General Manager Sánchez told Portada that there are two shareholders that have larger stakes. Sánchez did not want to disclose the names of these shareholders but noted that they are not former staffers of Hoy New York.

During a PR function yesterday for the launch in midtown Manhattan Sánchez noted yesterday that Ny Al Día staff (former Hoy New York employees) were not happy with the way Impremedia handled the closing of Hoy New York. “We were victims of corporate greed”, he noted.

Strong local coverage
Editor Vicglamar Torres emphasized that the new publication will have a strong local coverage component about the 20 different Hispanic communities (from 20 different Latin American countries of origin) living in the NYC area. “We are a source of communication aware of the needs of the Latin community living in New York  providing precise information in creative ways to keep the Big Apple, Long Island and New Jersey on top of things.” Torres added that the Monday will dedicate 50% to 55% of its overall editorial content to sports. International news will be sourced from newswire content.

Is New York a two daily Hispanic Newspaper city?
The new launch adds a second (paid) daily newspaper to the New York Spanish-language newspaper landscape. Impremedia’s El Diario/La Prensa is the other one. In addition, there are several weeklies including El Especialito which recently launched two new editions in New York City. General market newspapers The New York Post and Daily News publish supplements targeting the city’s latino population. In addition, The Daily News publishes a weekly newspaper called Hora Hispana. As noted above, Hoy New York, a free daily newspaper also published by Impremedia closed three months ago. At the time Rossana Rosado, editor of el  Diario La Prensa told Portada “that ceasing publication of the print version of Hoy NY will have a positive impact on El Diario La Prensa, as some of Hoy’s readers will pick up the paid product. Some regional and local clients have already moved over into El Diario. Fin de Semana will also be on line. In addition, we will continue to offer advertisers our residential walk program which delivers FSIs to up to 1.4 million households in NY on a weekly basis. 200,000 of those households are in zipcodes where Hispanics are 70% of the population.”.
